New Zealand Pass Around Ink Sample Library?

A brief update for anyone who may be interested:

I found a local leatherworker (Maiden Skins on Etsy) who is doing a custom made refillable mini journal for me. In the meantime I got one of her bound journals as well, not knowing if the paper would be fp-friendly, but turns out it is!

Hi,

Which size is this? I'm guessing that this is the 3.5 x4.5 in notebook?? Or is it the 6 x 4.5 in Journal ??

It looks good!

Cheers,John

Yeah, the 3.5x4.5. It's a bit thick for me to carry around every day so I'm glad I'm getting the refillable one as well. But it suits the Liliput perfectly and smells fabulous! :)

Wow so many new options with pen related websites, retailers and artisans. Thanks guys (I think! Could be an expensive curse!)

Got the box from John today! Was great having a yarn about pens and ink. :D I've started poking around at the inks but I can tell this will take me quite a while. Thankfully I've also got a couple of inks to contribute!

By the way, the new Pen Classics site is live (https://penclassics.nz/) and it looks AWESOME. They're carrying Nock cases too!

Hi

Yes I really enjoyed the "yarn"! ;-) It's really good to see the Pen Classics site updated. They've got some really interesting newer stuff there. Most notably of course - Robert Oster inks. :-)

Cheers,John

Enjoy the box sakamichi! Yes the new penclassic sites looks much better and is certainly a job well done. Great that they are stocking the Robert Oster inks at a reasonable price. Am currently sampling the Robert Oster Fire & Ice, a slightly bluer Iro Ku Jaku, very nice!

Hi, I've just joined the fountain pen network and pretty excited to connect with others in NZ and learn more about fountain pens - I've only just started. I have 3 inks:

  • J. Herbin - Rouille D'Ancre
  • Robert Oster - Australian Shiraz
  • Signuture - Blue Suede

I'm in Timaru and keen to get on board with the NZ pass around ink sample library. Happy to add some of each of my inks to the collection. Can someone let me know if it's ok to join in and how I go about doing so?

Cheers :)

Hi melmel! The box is with me at the moment, and I believe it's going up to Auckland afterwards according to the list, but Timaru is very close to where I am in Christchurch so it might make sense to go there first. HarrietHippo's the ink box wrangler so we'll see what she says. :)

Hi and welcome melmel. Yeah totally makes sense for the box to go to you next! Have fun. We usually try and optimise the list geographically so postage works out cheapest for everyone rather than yo-yoing around the country :-)

Sorry it's taking so long to get the box circulating to the next person! I'm waiting on some exciting inks I'd like to add to the pile and should have them in the mail on the 14th. :)

Thank you so much for adding me into the ink swap while the box was on the south island :)
I've probably only started using fountain pens 2 months ago so all these inks were terribly exciting to try out!

I make my journals out of 100gm hp colour laser paper which is pretty good for solving the problem of ink showing through on the back of the page, so I mostly tested the inks on this paper. The J.Herbin Rouge Hematite comes up beautifully, all shimmery and sheeny on it, when using my dip pen.

I'd never heard of iron gall inks before so when I used the Rohrer & Klinger - Scabiosa ink, I was so confused as to why it was a different colour. I loved the shading though! So feeling inspired and excited about iron gall.. I bought my first KWZ ink and opted for Mandarin. It's quite close in colour to J.Herbin - Lie de the.

I found I really like the pilot iroshizuku inks, they all flow so well in the pens, even in my extra fine lamy. Great colours too! Now I know why they cost that much more.. they're worth it!

I also had a play with the tomoe river paper which makes every ink look stunning!! I mostly did this with my dip pen for ease of changing colour quickly. Then tried the colours I really like in my fountain pens. The tomoe river paper really brings out the sheen and shading on a range of inks! Now I know why everyone love it. J.Herbin Ambre de birmanie was just stunning on that paper!

I see that to add photos I need to add a link to them and I don't have a public domain setup to upload photos to. How are you all adding photos??

The box arrived last back last week thanks and it was good to see it how it has grown and changed in make-up. Good to see it over-populated! And pretty impressed nothing has leaked yet :-) Am liking the look of the Kobe 17 and J Herbin Rouge Hematite at the moment. I was going to try and be useful and say that Anderson Pens are now stocking Kobe inks it would seem, but $30 USD! Guess its cheaper than a trip to Japan.

The round stickers for colour swatches are very useful thanks whoever included them. Melmel also added some of the paper discussed above, and I might add some of my colour copier paper and a little Rhodia and Tomoe River just so we can continue the experiment.

I'll see whether those Aussies are interested too for the next round but there's always a chance it might not make it back across the Tasman. Hmm or maybe we do need to send it to Japan to stock up on Iroshizuku, Sailor / Kobe, and Kyoto inks and Tomoe Paper ? /s :P

... So, is there a word for that moment when you realise that despite thinking you have only dipped a pen in up to the nib to test some ink, when you start writing and then look at your fingers, the evidence says perhaps you had indeed accidentally got some on the grip/barrel after all? I feel like this isn't likely to be a unique experience on this forum!

Any interest in the sampler doing the rounds again in NZ or time to post it to Australia? Starting to get a few choice papers in there now and library quite full!

Presume no one will object if I take a few out to bring it down to about 42 samples!? Quite liked Diamine Salamander, Kobe 17 and Rouge Hematite. Thanks everyone for their contributions!

Very keen on a Christchurch meetup! I was going to shoot out an email, glad you brought it up before me. :) I'm very interested in the Akkermans. Haven't got anything especially exciting to share though I've got my Pelikan and I've got a bottle of Voice Blueberry Pie coming soon.

@Harriet: 42 seems good. Glad to hear you liked the Salamander and Rouge Hematite, I think I put those in there.
