As a product designer and instructor, i have to compliment you on the design and use of material.

What application did you use to sculpt the data? I think solidworks, my students are saying z-brush....

Regards,

Brett

Yoshi...I own your first generation of the Stone Mask and love it. I love your design for the 2nd gen cap and the ink windows on the barrel...nice additions. The additional detail on the barrel is a little too busy for my taste. Excellent work, though. Your designs are so different from other pen makers that you have created your own niche. Kudos!! I look forward to future generations of your excellent pen creations.

Thank you for the kind words, Mary! Yes, I know you bought two of them for your grandkids and grad to hear they enjoy them.

My thoughts.

There is a contradiction in my eyes between the theme of the clip and the rest of the pen. The Easter Island face seems contradicted by the Greco-Roman appearance of the rest of the pen. Even if the patterns on the barrel are authentic to Easter Island, they need to be toned down a bit on the cap. The circles, ridges, and 'crown' on the face look too Greek.

If you change the face to a more Greco-Roman style, you may have another line of pens to sell.

The austere nature of your first version allowed one to focus on the material and the radical clip. This version distracts attention from the clip.

Keep up the work. I enjoy following your approach.

Yoshi...that is correct, Sir! So sweet of you to remember that. Although I may be foolish, I plan on showing them your new Stone Mask pens tomorrow. You'll probably hear me knocking again at your door as I'm sure they will love them.

There is no contradiction. It is exactly I’d like this mask to be seen. It is good to be seen as a Moai, and it is good to be seen as a Greco-Roman. I didn't specifically make it as a Moai or Greco-Roman. I made it as a simple generic mask with non expression. The simplicity gives you more imagination. That’s why I named it “Stone Mask”. "Moai" is just a nickname. Although, Moai inspired it, but also it's inspired by many other origin of masks in the world. I’d like Stone Mask to be seen as an African, Asian, European, Polynesian or any kind of human face. Believe it or not, I sometimes see my fathers face in it. Maybe I should call it Voodoo Mask. I just love to challenge the 3D printing capability of today.

What an interesting way to make a pen! How cool is that?!?

I love both versions (1 & 2)--I think I prefer the plainer version #1, but you have a Honu on version #2, and who can resist sea turtles? Pas moi!

A question, if you don't mind: Will there ever be other color options? I really don't like grey. I much prefer "jewel tones"--bright, deeply intense colors, but a good looking pastel version in a color I like would be acceptable, too. I'm not sure what your options are with a 3D printer when it comes to color of materials.

Thank you for the compliment! I've test printed with color as well, but I didn't like the result, They looked so cheap. The material for this pen is mixture of aluminum and nylon powder, it feels like a stone although light weight. At the moment, I belive, this is the best printing material for this pen.

What kind of 3d Printer do you use? Since its powder, I guess laser sinter maybe?

Thanks - Mike

I don't have 3D printer. I only do modeling and send files to the 3D printing service. Yes, it's laser sintered Alumide.
