Pen-Ink Bad Nib Creep Combos Compendium

Recommended Posts

So safe to say, that a significant majority of us here on FPN have dealt with nib creep in some form or another. While looking through a lot of the posted content, there is a lot of healthy debate concerning causes and solutions. My purpose here is to simply operate within the popular definition -ink seepage on to the nib (regardless of understanding of cause)- and have people post which pens and inks in combination seem to do it the most as a guide for those who are particularly bothered it.

My list is as follows thus far:

Lamy Safari: Sailor Jentle Black, Diamine Oxblood, Waterman Intense Black

Pilot Metropolitan: J. Herbin Perle Noire, Waterman Tender Purple

Please share your results and compare them to others so we can get a grip on this phenomenon of fountain pen ownership.

Not sure how useful this list would be, since every pen is very different. Even two pens from the same brand and same nib size.. the nib might be set better than the other.... so you will have more nib creep on one versus the other.

A list of inks that are famous for nib creep regardless of the pen.. seems to be more useful.

Ex. Diamine Ancient Copper.

A spectacularly grand example of "nib creep" in my limited experience has been Diamine's Ancient Copper in any pen, with any nib (particularly a wet one). Love this colour of ink, but........

Diamine's Burnt Sienna can be cranky too in this respect.

The type of metal the nib is made out of & how well (or not) the nib's surface (particularly around the slit or breather hole) is finished can contribute to nib creep.

I use Waterman black in several of my pens with ZERO nib creep.

I suspect as was mentioned, it might be a specific nib that is part of the problem.

Also how the pen is oriented and what motion/shock it is subject to, such as being in a school back pack sitting on the vibrating floor of a bus.

It only ever creeps in my Safari, nothing else. And the purple does not creep in that, but the purple does in the metropolitan. Its strange.

I know it has already been pointed out that each example of each pen can be different, but I am puzzled by the weight of opinion regarding Ancient Copper. I am onto my second bottle and have not experienced what I think of as nib creep with any one of what must be about a dozen pens. Put it in a pen where the cap does not seal well and that dramatic but harmless nib crud forms (this seems to be something afflicting orange dyes).

But I think of nib creep as when the ink creates a film on the front of the nib - something completely different as it occurs whilst writing, not during storage. Am I using different definitions?

Nib creep itself does not bother me and I seldom experience it. Being in UK, Noodler's is a specialist brand and I don't have many but both Zhivago and BBKingfisher creep and I notice MB Permanent Blue is creeping in a Lamy Syudio.

Bock titanium nibs + Montblanc Permanent Blue = Nib Creep Extravaganza :)

I actually do not mind nib creep, unphotogenic as it looks.
