Dr J Needs Help Again - De Atramentis Pearlescent Inks

On Wetness

First of all VORPAL thanks for your lovely work

Most D-a inks are wet Tin normal Pens this can be very helpful with scrathy nibs for example. In a steel fine nib it is a blessing. But in a gold nib my M800 XF tends to broeden linewidth a bit

But too wet is not good of course. But this is why YOU and the other testers come in... Dr j is always open for suggestions

I once talked to dr J on Ink and wetness. Glycol is added to assure a smooth flow. This mixing is a very secure Job Dr J told me....

I will talk to DR J on this issue so that future ink can be tweaked to be less wet.

I am consistently playing with inks and sparkles, so here are a couple of my best creations.

fpn_1477188939__2016-10-22_200057.jpg

1. Pilot Kon-peki with pearlescent sparkles. Excellent color, sheen, and shimmer.

fpn_1477189084__2016-10-22_200804.jpg

2. J. Herbin Vert Olive with pearlescent sparkles. Great for highlighting.

3. de Atramentis Apricot with golden sparkles. In my opinion, better than Diamine's Golden Sands because the color is richer and brighter.

GREAT WORK :)

I am still waiting on a reply for shipping costs, so I'm not sure how many samples will com my way.

I opted for all, but won't fill in the form until the price is known.

Also I seem to have been banned from the conversation.

If they are to expensive

do not worry

I will send you a tube or 2

Inks have arrived. Very fun to play with. I really liked the option of seeing the different types of sparkling flakes.

Here are the results of my preliminary studies. At the top of the first 6 images, I am using a calligraphic dip nib pen on Riley & Borden #234 heavy paper. At the bottom, I have loaded my favorite sparkle option into a fountain pen. Enjoy!

1. Amber Yellow. For me, this ink is not practical or useable. The base color is simply too light to be readable. Sorry.

fpn_1477589926__amber_yellow_trial.jpg

2. Brilliant Violet. Wonderful color. I really like this option.

fpn_1477589950__brilliant_violet_trial.j

3. Camelia Red. At first, I thought the color might be a bit too pink for me, but now that it has dried, I really LOVE this super bright red. Infinitely superior to Diamine's shimmering red.

fpn_1477589985__camelian_red_trial.jpg

4. Cyan Blue. Beautiful, rich color. But from the effect on my fingers, I suspect that this may be an ink that stains. The silver flakes, for me, are gorgeous.

fpn_1477590009__cyan_blue_trial.jpg

5. Magenta Red. A really beautiful red-violet (looks like the base color might be de Atramentis Lilac??). I like this very much.

fpn_1477590044__magenta_red_trial.jpg

6. Whiskey Brown. As the name suggests, this is a light brown, but the BRONZE flakes make it jump off of the page! Wonderfully warm effect.

fpn_1477590082__whiskey_brown-trial.jpg

One final image to show how some of the ink look when used on really cheap notebook filler paper.

fpn_1477590105__deatramentis_trial-cheap

So in the end, all but the yellow are inks that I would buy.

During the sample making the Cyan blue stained the pipettes.

Sinistral1 and I found that Cyan silver didn't stain, but look at how the others cling to the pipette.

I had to scrub with "Lava" soap to take it off of my fingers. The intensity of the color is beautiful, and a bit of a stain is a small price to pay for such great color.

Looks like the ink is super-saturated. And that's a good thing, in my book!

Hi Visva

Smart idea I use a Diplomat excellenx for that purpose Nib and feed can de dissaembled very easily for cleaning purposes. And rinse particles of the feed

I today tested the Violet bronze in respond to the Problems Vorpal experienced. Drying time is quit Long But wetness is not a problemin the M-nib

Smooth writing without Bleeding or Feathering

Will post photos of this tomorrow

I actually wrote up a few reviews and posted them in Co-Razy Views thread. I had the same problems with the Cyan Blue - definitely stains. I do like the silver the best.

I also played around with the Brilliant Violet samples. What a great color by itself! But I really liked it with the gold.

My favorite of all, however, is Indian Blue with copper sparkles.

fpn_1477693685__ibc_real_close.jpg

Conklin Duragraph with stub nib on Tomoe River Paper

Love the flow on these inks. I found them to be just right, with no clogging or nib crud. All of the samples of Cyan Blue and Brilliant Violet bled through the Cambridge notebook paper and Clairfontaine paper, and even on Tomoe River paper. I didn't notice any bleed through with the Indian Blue samples.

Truthfully, I have not been a fan of sparkly inks, but I do like these. The Cyan Blue samples are the only ones I wasn't thrilled with and that is because of the staining.

More fun photos soon.

My ink samples arrived a few days ago and I've been trying to figure out my best pen and paper combo for them. I'm going to try to get some real tests/reviews done tonight and hopefully I'll be able to get some decent photos.

CYAN STAINER

Must look into this....

If I remember correctlyAmberlea mentioned just the same Staining when she tested the De Atramentis Document inks Cyan

Do not know what thits is maxbe it is the Pigment used. I know that some Pigments are difficult for ink for example White Pigments... that is the reason so few White inks are on the market I suppose

Sinistral and Amberlea could you please post a pic of a staines test tube or converter... This way I can ask dr J and ask about this

One Thing is peculiar... Cyan as part of the CMYK range is used to mix every other colour... Funny that These inks do not stain although they contain Cyan....

Well will take contact to Dr J on this subject

Hi QHAJ

Maybe some advice on my behalve as the person who eneabled this test via DR J and WIht help of Amberlea and colleagues

These inks contain Metall particles wich may leave a residue on the feed of your beloved Fountain Pen

My advice is to use a pen that is easily to disassemble... I Take for example a Diploamt Excellene pen for this. In this case just pull out nib and feed en flusch under running water... Also the Converters of Diplomat pens are of good Quality and easy to take apart.... ( My experience Forget Parker and Waterman converters they cannot be disassembled... Funnily cheap converters can be)

I use a Jinhao X450 for testing. Very easy to clean.

My scans of my tests have not worked out, the sparkles do not show up properly.

I will try photographs, maybe later today.

All test forms completed on the Google forms.

Overall favourite - Violet Silver or India Blue Bronze??

I have noticed that issue to that is why in the original Topic I used both Scans and photo's ;)

What is your experience with wetness, flow an staining of the Cyan?

I was OK with wetness (quite wet but I like that), good flow (maybe a little much) and I didn't have any staining problems with any of the inks but on the other hand they were not in the pens for long.

I found that scanning the samples does not work well. While I do have a photographic kit, I found that my iPhone worked just as well. Because of the dreary weather we are having, I ended up having to add a light source which accounts for the cast on my photos. I've tried to correct this, but haven't found the best solution yet.
