J. Herbin Black Question

Inferno2Inferno

Recommended Posts

So one of my favorite fountain pen inks out there as far as black is concerned is J.Herbin Perle Noire. IMO it writes like silk no matter which pen I put it in. Just one question: does anybody else find that this particular ink tends to leak in the cap more often than others? Do you find your nib to be exceptionally wet with this particular black?

Any insights would be great!

Not in my experience.

The leak in the cap is in what pen?

The leak appears under what circumstances?

It didn't seem to leak with a Muji or now with a Penmanship cap; it's a deep black with excellent flow, it seemed to come out thicker on the Muji compared to other inks, or it might be an optical effect? It's a great ink, I might not be doing it a favour in the super thin Penmanship.

J. Herbin inks are "wet" inks, so some splattering within a cap isn't all that surprising. A pen with high ink flow may also be the culprit, but I suspect it's the ink.

Not in my experience either.

FWIW, I have three blacks that I like (from dry to wet):

· Pelikan Brillant Black

· J. Herbin Perle noire

· Aurora Black

I mean, when I say leak, I mean have a few drops on occasion that end up on the back of the pen when posted. This typically happens with my TWSBI ECO. The drops tend to appear after the pen has been in transit for a while; been in my backpack or some such. The reason I ask is because other inks do not seem to do this.

Perle Noire has been my only black for years. It outperforms all others, for my needs. You are right -- it is silky smooth with wonderful flow, darkness, and drying time. I see a lot less nib creep than with Noodler's Eel inks, and I use a variety of brands and models of pens. I use at least 100 ml yearly.

Oh boy, this is an intriguing post. I use black to practice calligraphy, mostly with Pilot Parallel pens. The blacks I've used are:

Noodler's Black

Noodler's Borealis Black, and

Private Reserve Velvet Black

Of those 3 I like the Borealis Black best for both its rich darkness and its flow. Though it dries to a slightly disappointing less dark black. Can any users of the Perle Noir compare that ink to their experience with any of the 3 I've noted?

Haven't seen this issue in my Pelikans (215 F nib & 205 EF nib).

However,I have to wait some days to get deep black in my EF nib

If you keep your pen with the nib side up you will avoid this problem. Maybe there is someplace inside the backpack you can clip the pen to and try to keep it right side up. However, if the pen is banging around in the backpack there is a greater chance these leaks will happen.

Thanks for this! I will be sure to keep the pens I fill with this in nib up in the clip slots instead of my pen case then.
