Comparison Between 2 Pilot Nibs: Pilot 90S And Metropolitan

Hi,

For those of you who own both a Pilot Metropolitan and a Pilot 90s (Stella, Stargazer, etc.), how do the nibs compare? Are they, in fact, functionally the same nib mounted on two different bodies? I find the Metropolitan fine too spidery and the medium too wide. Am wondering if a 90s would be a middle-way option, and if so, which nib to get.

The gold nib will be more wider that your standard steel nib I would say almost similar to a western sizing standard when it comes to pilot nibs and the nib and feed designs are different

Though I'mnot sure but you can check out the Pilot Custom and Celemo which has similar feed designs to the metropolitan

The 90S/Stella/Stargazer's nib is different from the one in the Metropolitan. It is a 14k gold nib that is of a similar type to the ones found on the Pilot Custom series (Custom 74, Custom Heritage 91, 92, etc.).

 

Writing experience with this family of nibs is quite different from the writing experience with the Metropolitan steel nib. These 14k nibs tend to be significantly wetter and a bit broader than Metropolitan nibs (so a Stargazer medium would be a bit broader than a Metropolitan medium, for instance). Also, these 14k nibs tend to be a little bit springy, just a bit, they are certainly not stiff 'nails' like the Metropolitan nib. The 14k nibs also tend to be very smooth, I would put most of them in the "almost buttery" or "entirely buttery" category of smoothness. Whether that is a good thing depends on your preferences (e.g. if you like a bit more feedback with your nibs, these might be too smooth for you).
