Waterman Kultur - Different Sized Nibs?

Hello, folks. I have another Waterman quandary, this time involving the Kultur. I've been hunting online but cannot seem to find this pen with anything other than a fine nib. Fine nibs and I don't tend to get along too well and the resulting writing is akin to spidery, spindly chicken scratch. I figured I'd pick the brains here before contacting Newell Rubbermaid. Fingers crossed!!!

I had discussions recently with a dealer in France and he could only get them with Fine nibs now. Please let us know what NR say.

Edited: 'now' added. The Kultur and Phileas would have been available with medium and broad nibs...well certainly the Phileas.

I have 2 Kulturs, a Harley Davidson version in F and a regular one in M nib. So they do exist...

I have a "flame" pattern Kultur, with a medium nib. However, "fine" is much more popular than "medium". This would be reflected in commercial production. The same was true with the Phileas. Finding a "medium" was difficult.

I have a couple of medium Phileas pens, that blue-brown-purpley pen. Can't say I ever use the mediums. I have not to my recollection seen a medium Kultur advertised, so if you have one you have an uncommon nib. I would like to find an EF Kultur.

Okay, so I finally heard back from NR. Yes, as some of you have noted, the mediums are out there. According to the email I received, NR may even be able to sell me one for $22.60 USD. (That's the cost of the item as well as s&h.) I sent a return email to determine if I can just get the nib itself, or perhaps the nib and feed, or if I have to buy the whole section.

Also of note is that in my initial email, I was also interested in a broad nib and asked after all sizes. It would appear that fine and medium are all that's offered. I will attempt to clarify and post when I know more.

Cheers!

Newell Rubbermaid doesn't sell just nibs, only sections.

You could PM our member Dutchpen and ask if he has a section in your size and what the cost will be. He often has parts for NR pens that are not current any more.

I would guestimate that fine and medium are all that there are. The pen is an entry level kind of pen, even though they have made some interesting editions like the Y2K pen and the Lara Croft Tombraider series. Fine nibs in all of mine, which suits me. As I get older the finer the nib the better. Doddering along with a medium leaves blots here and there.

  • 10 months later...

I Just got a blue translucent with F nib size, for me is more like M size (Lamy Safari).

Opened, inserted the cartridge and waited like 15 seconds and wrote as one of my best pens ! buttery smooth.

I'm just trying to seal the tiny cracks in the pen cap (near the clip), I've read that some complained that this issue cause slow starts.

If someone sealed correctly this small openings, please share with us, how did you sealed, which sealant did you use it.

You might try a thin coating of clear shellac. If you do not like it, it can be removed with alcohol, the solvent for shellac.

But the Kultur are just the ones in clear plastic, the flames pattern, US flag, Harley-Davidson and Tomb Raider are Phileas.

Kulturs were intended as students pens and were just sold in stationary stores and some schools (in France) and so were only produced in F nibs. It's what I know so far but I might as well be wrong.

Peace.

Kulturs exist in many guises, clear translucent but also non-translucent.. The Harleys are based on the Kultur. So are the Lara Croft versions.

The Phileas is another pen, with the same shape but with other charactteristics. These days Phileas are popular and fetch a lot of money so sellers of a Kultur like to "upgrade" their pen by also calling it Phileas. There is a long topic here devoted to the Phileas. Have a look there.
