See if adding a little water to the calli ink helps. As they say water makes ink drier. I suspect this is because it increases the surface tension. Experiment in a separate container, to prevent ruining all your ink at once.

I'm more inclined to take it back to the shop and see if I can't put the price of it towards some Higgins Eternal instead...

You might need to add a bit of Gum Arabic to Higgins Eternal to make it work well with pointed pens.

 

Noodlers' Black + water is a great combination that gives nice thin hairlines and dark darks and works well on most papers.
