Mont Blanc 149 Pen Stand Is Back

Good day folks,

Just thought I'd bring this up as no one else seems to have.

Has anyone else noticed that the 149 pen stands are back for sale. It would appear that the gold is in stock and the platinum and rose gold are listed as coming soon (though Akkerman in the Netherlands seems to have the platinum stand in stock - tempted to order! :ninja: ).

Has anyone tried these new stands and if so how do they compare with the old ones?

Kind Regards

Thanks for the info.

I'm not keen on the leather, but the drawer for cap storage is a good idea. (Did the old ones have such a facility?)

Not the most common ones from the 1980s (stone base) or the lucite base staff from the 1990s to 2000s.

Does that cap come with it or do you attach your own?

the pen stand has its own built in cap that you put the pen into, and then on the old ones you would have had to store your original cap somewhere. This new version has a drawer that you can put your cap into so you dont forget and lose where you put the cap.

I like this new design.

I presume the built-in cap is not threaded. Does it have a soft lining to avoid scratching and/or prevent drying out?

The drawer is a neat feature :)

In the photo, my eyes (almost?) see threads. I am not sure.

In my personal opinion the style of the "Art of Writing" era of the curved acrylic stand, inkwell (not very useful but beautiful) letter opener, and blotter, can't be matched. Regardless of whether it has a drawer I think I can make the current leather one with a small cardboard box and some faux leather covering from Michaels crafts. It is just a box with a flute on top. You can even do better with a vintage one. 146 pens fit the Parkers (see thread:

Mb 146 Pens Fit Vintage Parker Desk Stands for pictures of some examples). Very often the pen is long gone from these pen stands so they can be purchased for a fraction of the cost of a new or even used MB.

Just ordered the platinum one, I look forward to its arrival.

In all fairness totally I agree with the above comment, it does look like you could make it for £15 and not the close to £400 they are asking for it. But to be frank everything purchased from Mont Blanc is overpriced. You don't buy it because you think it is value for money.

I can only speak for myself but as an arrogant and pathological narcissist I like being able to look at that on my desk and say yup, I spent £400 on something that's ridiculously overpriced but hey oh, I didn't kick an old lady today, so I guess it all balances out.

It may seem so, but you're not accounting for Montblanc's material costs. There are only a few herds of tiny, cubic cows left in Piedmont, and it takes an extraordinarily long time for their skin to congeal to sufficient solidity for slaughter and use.

I hate to burst your bubble, but my mate's dog's vet's milkman delivered milk to the CEO of the farm next door to the farm that Mont Blanc use to make the stands. He told him that they just use regular cows and tell everyone they use tiny cubic cows. Sadly you have been fooled by typical big brand marketing.

Personally I think that the design of the new pen stand lacks any coherence. There is no coherence between the shiny resin of the tulip and the matte finish of the textured leather, no reasons (beyond costs, I guess) to have the metal that pivots the tulip in a different trim (gun metal?) from that of the tulip itself (gold, platinum, or rose gold), and no stylistic reasons to use a logotype in rhutenium finish on a stand made for a gold and black (or platinum and black, or rose-gold and black) pen. The size of the leather base is disproportioned to the pen cap, which looks flimsy on that overgrown pedestal. I never was a fan of the someway "lapidary" stand with the large, rectangular, black base, but it surely was a much better fit for the pen. Not to speak of the discontinued crystal and resin stilophore, which was simply, I insist, simply, superb in its pure lines, the sophistication of the materials, and the subtlety in the use of Montblanc's logotype. Just my opinion.

Hi guys,

I just received my stand. It feels like a high quality product and looks fantastic, though admittedly overpriced. However just as a heads up there are two big downsides to it IMHO. First the pen / cap is free spinning in the base. This for some people my not be a problem however I personally do not like it. It is easy to go to grab the pen and knock it and then it spins around. Secondly the cap is not a push cap but a screw cap which means its not quite as easy as just grab an go.

I recently also received a stand for my Kaweco Dia 2. Comparing these two sets are unfair as they are designed and priced for two different ends of the market; however I would say If anyone is looking for a nice pen and stand set really consider the Kaweco.

Kind Regards
