Gold Section Ring Black Spots - Pitting?

Recommended Posts

Today, I received an older Sailor fountain pen which has the gold section ring near the nib.

Unfortunately, there seems to be some pitting - not sure of the word - on the gold section ring.

Is there anyway to remove those spots? And are those black spots prone to spreading further? Any information will be much appreciated. Thanks.

No and yes, unfortunately. Plated trim rings at the front of the section are one of the worst design choices made by modern penmakers, and they're nearly all guilty of it. There's a reason no quality fountain pen had this attribute while the fountain pen was still the dominant writing instrument.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll just have to bear with it until it eventually wears the whole ring away.
