Yellow Sunset - Robert Oster Signature Ink

Robert Oster is new player in fountain pen ink market. He operates through ebay shop. The inks are sold in 50 ml PET bottles with a tightly secure twist cap. I don't know who makes the inks for the shop, but the colors look interesting and fresh. At the moment Robert Oster inks are available in colors

On Robert Oster's shop website Yellow Sunset is described as follows: "Yellow Sunset has excellent shading, with a beautifully multi-toned palette. See by our photos the difference in the same sample under different light. You'll fall in love with Yellow Sunset too"

The color looks nice in broad nibs but in finer ones it's flat and feels dry. If you use F / EF or dry M nibs you can pass on this one. If however you like yellows and have a flock of ink-hungdy double-broads / italics / flex nibs then you may finf it quite pleasing.

Oh Vis.. you need to see this Yellow once is in your pen for sometime. :wub:

 

I have it on my vintage Sheaffer Flat Top with a 1.9 stub .. and is GORGEOUS... I also noticed that it gets darker with time.

 

 

I will take a picture of it. I had it in my pen since I got it.... a few weeks now.

Pics... below.. Both picture were taken just a few minutes ago, thus you can assume same lighting. Same pen, on the same paper (my notebook).

 

 

Original color. This is my pen with a fresh fill of Robert Oster Signature Yellow Sun Ink. Pen was inked a few weeks ago (4-5 weeks)

 

 

 

and this ... was written a couple of days ago. I believe I noticed way before the ink was getting darker... but not until I put them side be side I realize how much darker it got. Also.. I must have refilled at least once.

 

 

I personally LOOOVE IT!!!!... The shading is still strong and it still flows quite well on my 1.9 Stub.... :lol:

Talking about yellow... What would you say is the closest match to MB Golden Yellow? The colour has grown on me, but I am disappointed with the SITB issues. I mean - a legible and not very dry yellow ink.

This one seems to be quite nice and the darkening is a very quirky property, but I dislike dry inks and you mention that it tends to be dry, so I'm a bit disaffected. Probably inequitably!

I will say to try Hellianthus... from Rohrer & Klingner.

Maybe it would work! I have seen Helianthus once in real life and it was barely legible, but I guess it was because of the nib used - I think it was Japanese M.

Helianthus is really nice. Sadly it behaves badly in most of the pens. It caused serious nib crud in every pen I ever filled with it and after few days it clogs the pens. It's the only R&K ink I wouldn't recommend. Others are simply amazing, especially for the price.

I find myself very forgiving with inks... most my pens are very wet and broad, so it makes it easy for an ink to behave and show its beauty. The only ink I remember getting all cruddy was Ancient Copper (which I still love anyway!!) and one of the Herbin Orange... Orange Indianne (which I gave away.. I couldn't get it to behave in any of my pens) .. I believe Hellianthus performed well in my pens.

I used to be forgiving but with time I came to conclusion that bad inks aren't worthy of my time and money I want them to behave well in all pens. If they don't I won't use them and I won't recommend them

Orange Indien shouldn't cause you trouble but on the other hand I never used it for a long time.

I would have to agree with Vis on this. I love Helianthus. The color is perfect. But, each time I use it, it causes major nib crud. And I can only have it in the pen for a few days, otherwise it will clog even the most forgiving pen. I do use it, but I use if for a day or two, then dump it and clean the pen.

I'm on my second bottle of Orange Indien, zero problems; it looks spectacular with thicker nibs (thicker being Lamy M instead of F for me).

This does look to be a reasonable substitute for MB Golden Yellow, minus the mildew. Speaking of MBGY, I decided to take a chance on the new batch that is coming out next month. You can order it through Fountain Pen Hospital in NY.
