Bock Italic Nibs

Hi All,

Just an update here. I received my consignment of bock italic nibs today.

 

First thing I tried was to pull out the #5 nib of grade 1.5 and placed it on my Noodler's Nib Creaper.

 

Phil is correct, the curvature of the bock nib matches that of the Noodler's Nib Creaper and the Kaweco Sport nibs, so I had no trouble getting it to fit on there.

 

The thing I was concerned about was that the bock nibs were a tad bit taller than the Kawecos (3 or 4mm), so I was afraid that the nib would not fit lengthwise when the pen is capped.

 

Luckily there was plenty of clearance in the nib creaper's cap so I didn't run into any issues at all.

 

For those of you that are looking for an ebonite feed to go with this nib, the nib creaper might be an option you want to try out.

 

I'll try to post updates on this thread as I explore other options, eg. the #5 kit housing will be compatible with the widely ubiquitous JoWo #6 nib housing, (eg. Franklin Christoph, Ranga, Edison).

First Impressions:

 

The #5 nib I've tried out so far, seems to behave really well. Tines are aligned, so I'm not seeing any scratchiness on side-strokes in either directions.

 

There was a bit of gunk in the ink channel which I quickly flossed out before use. Ink channel showed a narrow beam of light when held up to a lamp and peered through, so I knew when this nib is paired with a juicy feed like Nib Creaper, I'll get plenty of flow to satisfy the 1.5 grade nib.

 

Other than that, the nib seemed to be in mint conditions and it's quite smooth.

Clarification for something I stated in the original post:

 

The shipping was fast, but coming from UK to sunny California will take some time. It was probably a good thing that they didn't provide any tracking number otherwise I'd be very impatiently checking the progress of the long journey every few hours.

 

 

The reason why there was no tracking number provided was because I opted for the standard shipping instead of shipping+tracking+signature.

 

It was my own fault basically.. I had chose that method of shipment and forgot that I did that.

 

I ordered several more nibs again (because I loved the ones I've received so far) and saw the same two shipment options,

- Straight Royal Mail shipment = 3 British Pounds,

- Royal Mail shipment + track + signature = 8 British Pounds

 

I chose the former again, but I know not to kvetch about the tracking number now

 

Just putting it out there so there's no miscommunication..

I have to add to this thread . After reading this thread, I decided to order just 2 Italic nibs as a bit of an experiment. I am so impressed with the service! I took the cheap postage option and the nibs still arrived in Australia in just over a week. Great communication and packaging. Definitely a new and repeat customer. Thank you Beaufort Inks.

At last - I've found this thread again. I knew we'd all been talking about Bock 060 nibs for Kawecos, and I couldn't remember where.

 

Anyway, just a quick update on them for anyone who is still interested....

 

Last week saw the arrival of a very small quantity of 060 nibs onto our stock list. They're all polished steel and currently available in EF, F & M. Depending on how the demand goes, I'm happy to consider keeping these in stock as a permanent line, and perhaps in some other finishes too.. We'll see how it goes.

 

Someone in this thread was also asking about titanium size 5 in other point widths - we've now got those (type 180) in EF, F & M too, and the size 6 titaniums (type 250) now run to EF, F, M & B.

Nobody mentioned size 8 nibs, but I can't resist saying that we've now got some of those in stock too.(type 380) Just make sure you're sitting down if you're thinking of heading over to the website to check out the prices of those. They're solid 18K.

There are quite a few more additions, but I'm not going to list them - this post didn't set out to be an advert, although it seems to have ended up the way - sorry - I just wanted to update contributors to this thread of the new arrival we'd all been talking about

Interesting thread. To the OP, there is a company that machines pens and uses Bock nibs. Since you have the nibs, you could get the rest of the pen made for you and not have to worry about pulling and replacing nibs off the unit.

Does the #6 stock Bock nib/feed/housing as sold by Beaufort fit a modern Conway Stewart pen? I refer to models such as the Belliver and Wellington that came with Bock #6 nibs, and by "fit" I mean screw into the pen directly without disassembling the nib/feed/housing kit.

I don't know the answer to your questions David, but I see elsewhere on the FPN that you own at least one of the pens you mention, so if you could post a photo of the housing (or housings - if you have both) I might be able to advise you a little better.

Sorry to step in, but if I can chip in my limited knowledge, this nib unit seems quite the #250 Bock #6 nib unit I have recently ordered from BeaufortInk for my Kaigelus.

Hopefully Phil will give us his insight soon ...

Thanks to all for a very informative thread ... to which I'm obviously a late arrival. I'd be grateful if any of you have answers to a couple of questions regarding Bock #6/250 stub (calligraphy) nibs ...

 

1. For Karas Kustoms pens that are fitted with Bock #6/250 nibs, is the "Bock housing/feed" or the "Kit housing/feed" correct? The Beaufort image of the "Bock housing/feed" ( looks like the housing that was installed on the pens shipped from Karas, but I've read elsewhere on FPN that Karas pens are considered to be kit pens.

 

2. Since Bock does not appear to make any stub nibs narrower than 1.1mm, I'm considering having a Bock #6/250 1.1 stub nib ground down to 0.7 or 0.8. I'd also like to see how a bit of extra polishing/grinding might affect the performance of a stock Bock #6/250 1.1 stub nib. Can anyone recommend a nib tuner that is particularly adept with stub nibs. Thanks, John

They come in two sizes that are smaller grade than 1.1. You have the option of 0.6 and 0.8.

 

They are superb nibs. I have the 0.8 on a singularity which I carry with me everyday.

 

In theory the nib should be compatible with a bock housing and feed, though I haven't personally tested that particular combination before.

 

The nemosine nibds are available from the Goulet's now but I got them from xfountainpens back in the day when they hadnt yet changed their name to birmingham pens.

If you're replacing a Bock nib in a Karas pen, you need to buy the nib in a Bock housing, rather than a "kit compatible" housing. A Bock housing will screw straight into your Karas as a direct replacement.

 

My understanding is that with the exception of the nib assembly and the ink converter, Karas manufacture all the components of their pens themselves, so I don't believe they could be regarded as kit pens.
