Pen/cartridge Compatibility

Ernst Bitterman

Recommended Posts

...or, how I wasted about six hours I could have spent more productively.  I got a bee in my bonnet about running up a chart that shows what carts you can put in what pens.  I know that if you've been around the block of pens at all, this is not a big deal, but we do occasionally hear on the various fora-- "What does a Worstien 75X take?  My Pampelmouse cartridges don't fit!"

This is a more easily read version of it.  I will be updating as I check some hacks, and those updates will magically appear below.  I may even react to people making suggestions here.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

Fantastic resource, this should be pinned to deal with the common question 'what cartridges fit my pen'.

Impressive work!

You need to add Reynolds cartridges. It's a brand of Sanford Europe aka Newell Rubbermaid and they make/made standard cartridges. Also, you've listed rotring pens but not cartridges (these are still made).

If I think of others I'll post them here.

Great work. Thank you. :)

I've also seen Schneider cartridges on ebay recently. I assume they are International size.

Done, done and done. I know I looked at Rotring and Schneider during yesterday's flurry; how I managed to avoid putting them on eludes me.

Not sure if it is relevant, but there is a platinum adaptor that means they will take international standard.

The Plasir will not take IS long cartridges - (well, it will but they explode after a while as the fit is a little too tight).

That also means Nakaya pens with the Platinum adapter will be able to use International Standard cartridges. But with the adapter I find International Standard converters sometimes too long to fit.

Wow! Useful, we need one for converters too.

@Ernst Bitterman

Thank you for this informative thread.

Unfortunately, my browser appears to be preventing me from downloading the chart via Google Docs, Google Charts, or any other Google resource, in fact.

Might there be a link to this document in an alternative format, or perhaps even the Google format but downloadable as a file, not via browser link? Any downloadable file version, would be very helpful.

Your assistance would be most appreciated and, once more, thank you.

The OP was last seen on FPN over two years ago.

Anyway, here's a copy of his spreadsheet as a PDF, which I downloaded/exported without asking for permission first; I'll just have to assume that if he shared it on FPN in a post, especially in a section indexed by search engines such as Google, then it's fair use to repost in the same channel of social media:

Pen-Cartridge Compatibility - Google Drive.pdf

This is my take of the question, as posted (for open access) on Reddit:

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Thank you, indeed! Very helpful for other too, I believe!

Update:
Regrettably, when I tried to open your PDF it displays only a portion of the extensive list. Do you have a more complete file?

Update of the update:
I asked a friend of mine, who possesses merely standard IT skills, to assist me in obtaining the file (given my limitations) and here it is:

Pen Cartridge Compatibility.xlsx

I hope that I have not inadvertently breached any copyright or violated forum rules. If that is the case, I sincerely apologise and would kindly ask the webmaster to make the necessary corrections.

For anyone who, like me, doesn't use 'Billware', I have downloaded the spreadsheet from Ernst's Google spreadsheet, but in the '.ods' format.

In theory, my spreadsheet software might be able to read a '.xlsx' file, but sometimes things such as formatting and fonts go Very Wrong when trying to open the post-2010 MS Office formats in my 'office' software.

The '.ods' format is an 'open' format - every modern spreadsheet program can open it, read it, edit it, and save it correctly.
Whether the program was made by Microsoft, Apple, or one of the various 'open' office suites.

So, if one goes to Ernst's Google spreadsheet, and clicks on 'File', and then on 'Download', one can download it in any of the following formats:

  • .xlsx
  • .ods
  • .pdf
  • .html
  • .csv
  • .tsv

@Mercian, I can't say if it renders the same as the MS version, but this spreadsheet did open for me in LibreOffice.

Currently most used pen: Parker 21 <F> -- filled with TWSBI Blue Black ink

Thanks for that!

Since making my post I have discovered that the file is available in several formats from Ernst's link.
So I now have edited my previous post, in order to list them 😊
