Is My Visconti Rembrandt Nib Defective?

Hi FPN!

So my parents just got back from vacation in Italy and while they were there they had a chance to stop by the Visconti store in Florence and get me a Rembrandt as a belated birthday present. The pen looks very nice, but I as I took a closer look at the nib under a loupe I noticed that the right tine has just a little bit more tipping material than the left. The results are a mildly scratchy writing experience and depending on how I rotate the pen, different ink flow. The nib is broad, but doesn't always write like a broad should.

Is this normal with Visconti steel nibs? And what would be the best way I could a adjust it without having to ship my new pen off to a nibmeister right away?

Thanks so much!

The size of the tipping material is really irrelevant so that's very unlikely to be your problem. It is alignment at the point where it touches the paper that you need to check.

Many pens have more tipping material on one tine than the other (imagine how hard it it to be that precise when working with something so small). I haven't noticed that to make a difference in how my pens write. It's more likely that the tines are out of alignment slightly Take a look to make sure that the tines are aligned (where they touch the paper, many people look at the very tip which is not where the nib touches the paper unless you hold the pen vertically) and smoothed (but not overly smoothed as to create baby's bottom, which is common with Viscontis).
