Looks like the new Wahl-Eversharp. Pretty sure it has a two-tone nib.

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Your correct, it's the Decoband Demonstrator. And the nib is the Superflex.

Retired, twice. Time to do more things, writing being one.

Thanks to those who like the pic. Setup is a bit complex.

  • translucent light table - but any sheet of translucent plastic would do
  • flash under table to give background light
  • large soft box above shining straight down (gives diffuse light)
  • white reflector boards at sides (reduces proportional brightness of reflections)
  • small silver metal reflector above - near lens
  • flash aimed at dorsal reflector to accentuate that reflection
  • 135mm lens at f11 on medium format camera (digital)
  • 12 image stack rendered in Helicon Focus (medium format lenses have very shallow depth of field)
  • I popped outside to pick the plants.

Images like this are technical exercises, though the goal is that none of that be obvious.

what is the converter used...

The pen is Waterman Kultur Demonstrator, fine nib, with rOtring converter. The piston gaskets is red, reminiscent of rOtring (red ring), a cool feature.

Here is the setup from today. Changes all the time, but it is similar. Below is the image I was making, reflecting a later time in the seasonal cycle of plants.

Again, thanks for the kind comments. I hesitated to show the equipment because it is not really about pens. To explain - there are lots of ways to make pen photos. Product shots document the pen itself and, while they can appear simple, are very demanding to do well. Context shots have more to do with the photography than the pen. They may give a less accurate impression of the product while trying to present its interaction with light, color, etc. To do product or context really well (at the pro or advanced amateur level) requires knowledge, skill and some equipment. The thread on technique is a great read for anyone thinking of making pen shots and I hope to see more material there.

Most pen hobbyists are not photography boffins, however, and making high quality images is not the point. The point is communication about pens. A pen does not have to be in a studio rig to show its features - though I draw the line at fuzzy focus. In many cases, cell phone photos are all we need. There are some really nice shots of demonstrators on this thread, many taken with the simplest equipment. It's all good.

You have summed up a classic debate quite well. :)

Others would say that if you can "see what's going on inside" then it is a demonstrator.

The term generally is used pretty loosely, in my experience.

Best Regards, greg

Same here, I definitely don't consider my black 823 a demonstrator, but it sure is nice to see the ink level so clearly as compared to something like a Lamy 2000 or a MB-149 with their small ink window! BTW, Pilot 823 w/ 'M' nib = My favorite pen here too haha

Currently Inked = Pilot Custom 823 - 14Kt Gold 'M' Nib -- Visconti Kakadu LE #100/100 - 18Kt Gold 'M' Nib -- Visconti Homo Sapiens London Fog LE #785/888 - 23Kt Pd "1.3mm Stub" Nib -- Pelikan 100N Transitional - 14Kt Gold 'OF' Nib -- Pelikan 400 - 14Kt Gold 'KF' Nib (All Inked with Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black) -- Pelikan M200 West Germany - SS 'OBB' Nib

The pen in rotation today is Wality 69T and it is inked with Diamine Salamander. This is perfectly finished demonstrator pen and yes it is an eyedropper version only.

I keep doing Conids, but since I gave away my TWSBIs the selection is limited here. An excuse to get another demonstrator!

Let me add a pic of a unique demonstrator that was presented to this forum a couple of years ago:

It's a Montblanc 139 demonstrator made by our very own Maxpens using vintage celluloid. Original thread here.
