Clearing Up Transparency

Looking for some advice. I recently acquired a green striated 140. I'm guessing that mine is one of the later models as the green striations are pretty uniform and the nib collar was the clear styrene (spelling??). I've replaced the collar and generally cleaned everything up, leaving me with a great daily writer. The only issue is that you can't see the ink through the barrel at all. I have another, older 140 and the barrel has great transparency. Any tricks or advice on improving transparency? Can that even be done? Any advice appreciated!

Is it that the barrel is heavily stained? Have you tried a dilute ammonia solution to see if that will dissolve some of that old ink?
