Opening Up Bhr Eyedropper

Recommended Posts

I picked up a BHR eyedropper with an overlay, very cheap because it is a no name in somewhat battered condition. It's brassed in several places, dented here and there, something indescribable happened to the metal in one or two spots - if ever there was a potential Century old Gold Filled Embossed Overlay Eyedropper knocking around pen, this one is it.

It cleaned up pretty nice for what I paid and I am sure I have one or more nibs that will fit it hanging around here somewhere - but first I have to get the section out of/off the barrel.

Other than the standard "Patience - heat carefully with hot air, fingers in airflow if it's too hot for them it is too hot for pen, try to open, if it does not work try again, patience, patience, it can take time" is there anything I should know about doing this? Can BHR be soaked in cool water? Is there a certain way to hold my mouth or incantation I should be muttering?

Thanks in advance for reading and advice.

Most overlays were applied to a hard rubber body. Prolonged soaking will discolor the material, turning it to a drab olive/brown color.

You suggest the pen lacks a nib. Is the feed missing as well? If so, using an eye dropper, try filling the pen with water to flush any old ink that may be in the barrel. Repeat until the drained water looks clear. Then go back to the “Heat/Patience” drill.

Good luck with it.

Post a pic when you can. Would be nice to see it.

The section is partly but not entirely into the pen, and the feed is downin the section, stuck somehow - there is no nib.

For what I paid for this I am more than happy to get a new nib for it - I just have to get it into it's pieces first....
