I have tried perhaps dozens of times to write with EF, F and M nib sizes, frankly, even EF comes nowhere near my Pilot pen, which was slightly upsetting - I hoped for a closer match. The Manager suggested that there are some special events and I could perhaps visit one in London, where the entire Montblanc Elite is present and things might be on offer, including cutting/altering the nib to even finer size....but am not too sure, perhaps I should just reconcile with it.

.....

So, folks, I have acquired my first Montbanc writing instrument - 149 Meisterstuck 90th Anniversary Fountain Pen! Photos to follow if I can ever master/find the way to upload onto FPN...

So what nib size did you end up with?

I will never understand why someone can write with a carpet knife. I prefer OB or OBB nibs. B)

Nice work, man!

The 90th is a beautiful nib.

(Have you seen that same nib on the 90th skeleton pen? Better get saving your pennies.)

Hope the EF works out - but, remember, you've got a trial period (6 weeks?) during which you can exchange if for a different size. (I live on the B - BB side, so I'm biased)

Pleased it all went well - and ended* with an excellent outcome.

Good choice.

Enjoy.

Thank you. I guess the same applies to german vs japanese cars. I have had Lexus for years, but whenever I try driving BMW or Merc the passion/refinement is just not there... Ok, it is an old Lexus (1998) and the latest Merc E class and BMW 5 series were both of 2015, but I would still choose the old japanese motor... Same with the pens; having used MB for nearly a day now, I will have to write my lectures with Pilot as it is much finer writing. MB will be ok for my work notes though. Most likely will buy a japanese writing instrument in the future, just will need to decide which one exactly :)

Thanks, I can fully vouch for your last statement. I will write with my 90th Anniversary MB for about a year until am ready to go for another such fine addition into my collection, but it will most likely be a japanese pen with the F nib :)

Yeh, right. That's how we all start out. A 149 in gold was my first, a 149 90th my most recent and shortly to be joined by a 110th black when I get to Bond Street on Wednesday.

  • 2 weeks later...

Does anyone know if I can get a new nib for my Meisterstuck 149? I can't find any information on this topic anywhere....the nib has already been adjusted but it's still not right for me.......the pen, I think, dates from late 80's, early 90's. I realise it probably won't be cheap........

As one can't buy a new Montblanc nib you should ask your local Montblanc dealer to get your pen serviced. BUT insist on leaving all other parts like they are! Especially mention that you definitely don't want a switch of the barrel or cap!

Or you can ask one of the nib masters to retip your nib. John Mottishaw at nibs.com does a very fine job.

Yes, if that's what you'd requested.

As you are aware, it's an expensive process.

But an estimate is free, if you can get to a shop.

Otherwise: I sometimes see 149 nibs on ebay. I think I've seen them in the classifieds on FPN and penboard.de.

Not very often, though. So you may have to be patient, if you go this route.

Unless the pen has sentimental value, you could sell and buy another 149 with the nib you seek (used) .

May I ask; what is the problem with your current nib? What work did you have done?

A good nib technician can reslove a lot of nib issues. Unless it has snapped in half etc.

Good luck

It will be about $300 USD for a new nib from MB. You are better off cost wise selling your pen and buying another used one. Or as also noted, get it retiped for something like $75.

They were amazed when I told them that I had paid $33US for the 149 back in 1967.

I have a 149 that still has the $33 sticker on it. Your memory confirms my dating of the pen. Thanks!
