To each their own. I love my 845s and would love a larger version.

Simple black urushi is hard to beat. Simply elegant. Elegantly simple

I'm not exactly sure what I was expecting but I'm a little surprised they just super-sized the 845. I guess since the 823 and 845 are very different pens I expected the upcoming pen to be a new design. Although, this is the same approach used by Pelikan (M800/M1000) and Montblanc (146/149) and probably others.

I just hope they eventually release some color variations like they have with the 845.

Thank you Tinjapan for the link.

I like my Custom 845s, and I like this pen. I would have loved a BB nib on this pen though.

Link to the blog about the upcoming new Pilot pen.

Thank you so much for posting this.

It really is a 845 on steroids... and the 845 was already about the same size as a 149 and M1000 (although not same girth), so this is a huge pen.

As Mulrich pointed out, nothing wrong with being similar but just a larger pen, since MB, Pelikan (and Sailor, since the simplest KoP is a 1911 on steroids) do the same. I think it would be hard for Pilot to do anything else without getting into the Yukari Royale market.

I like that it is a flat top and that urushi is in the cap band. So, I will try to get one of these. I hope that in the future they release one in Vermillion.

I wonder if Tokyo Pen Shop Quill will get a Vermilion or specialty nib offering.

I was thinking the same... That would spell trouble for my wallet :D .

Quick question:

Do people in Japan use FP as primary fine writing instrument? What I am asking is are roller balls very popular like they are in the US? What if this new pen isn't even a FP?

hmmm not sure about US but compared to aussie roller balls/gel pens are the staple but there are definitely more users of Fps kind of like in the minority in japan where as where over here fp users are almost non-existent in school.

Looking at the angles in that photo, I'm thinking that the new model isn't actually too much longer than the 845, but it's definitely wider. I think open/unposted the length will be even closer.

I'm actually looking forward to it, since the 823/845 is too narrow for me to use for an extended period. Also, flat tops and bigger nib +++

You're absolutely right!

Probably the body length is around the same and the (small) added capped length is just because of the larger nib.

I guess I was too excited to pay close attention.

I also prefer fatter pens and larger nibs, so I'm very happy with this.

I completely agree. I guess I was hoping/wishing more for something along the lines of the KOP in ebonite. That would have been perfect and different. While this is nice, it is not different enough from the 845. But that's just me.

Thanks for this information (and for the link with pictures). It looks somewhat similar to the Sailor Pro Gear format, which is a Good Thing. I wonder how much it will sell for in Europe (where Japanese pens seem to be subject to a huge mark-up).

I agree with you. I was looking for something a little more "special" for that kind of price. Maybe a different material or a more unique filling mechanism. Sharp looking but too similar to the 845 for my taste.

I have no problems with the material or filling system (Con-70 is a fav even though I consider myself a piston snob). The shape and design not so much.

Perfect opportunity to basically do a ebonite Yukari royale with smaller nib.

I have posted a photo of four black urushi pens in another thread in the Japan forum, and I thought it might be appropriate to post it again here, since all four pens belong to the larger than normal variety:

Namiki Yukari Royale, Nakaya Cigar Writer, Ban-ei for Danitrio and Yotsubishi. The last two are Japanese eyedroppers. I wonder how the new Pilot flagship pen will look like.
