Purple Ink That Looks Like Caput Mortuum?

Hello :)

I was reading through the forums and found a mention of a most intriguing and sonewhat morbid paint color called Caput Mortuum.

I see that it can refer to two different colors, but I am very interested in possibly finding an ink that matches the more purple or "cardinal red" variety.

Can anyone suggest an existing ink that is similar to this?

If there is none to be found I may try to mix my own.

A wash of DeAtramentis Elderberry looks like it could be close.

Or maybe one of Noodler's Black Swan inks?

Diamine Tyrian Purple and Noodler's Burgundy or BSiAS 1 do look like they could be on the right track.

Thank you both for the suggestions!

Noodler's Nightshade.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Tyrian Purple looks a tad bit more purple/violet to me. I was thinking a burgundy colour like the Pen & Message Old Burgundy, or maybe R&K Alt-Bordeaux (but I don't remember too clearly how that one is supposed to look, so it might be really off!).

I was once a bottle of ink, Inky Dinky Thinky Inky, Blacky Minky Bottle of Ink!

KWZ Brown pink is definitely a color you want to look into. It contains a blue part in it (Visible in chromatography), so it does give sort of a purplish-brown-pink-puce impression. I love such complex colors!

Perhaps even more purple compared to your example, though. I'll admit that nightshade -at least in the swatch - is closer, but Brown-pink gives more of the "Cardinal purple" impression that caput mortuum was traditionally used for.

Nightshade and the Swans, however, does look promising too, and so does Pen and Message Old Burgundy - they're all inks that are on my "to try" list someday.

BTW, I love your Flammarion engraving avatar!

It looks like I may be going on a sample hunt :)

These are wonderful suggestions. Thank you all.

And thank you! I have liked that image for years, but never knew what it was called until a few days ago when I went on a massive hunt for it.

Opps me sorry. I took several Botanical Illustration classes at the Denver Botanic Gardens. One of the colors I used a lot was Caput Mortuum Violet.

Here is another version of it in Watercolor if it helps.

Okay, I have the very last few drops of Nightshade that I used for this experiment, and I have Pen and Messenger Burgundy (another sample) inked up. I've doodled and as soon as it's dry I will scan it. Then I will wash and scan and upload.

Well, I think Nightshade may be too purple.
