Brand New: The Kaweco Sport Mini Piston Type Converter

Kaweco have just brought out a brand new mini piston type converter for their Sport pens.

This nifty little converter fits into all of the Kaweco Sport range of pens, (not the Liliput!) allowing you to use bottled ink as well as cartridges in your Kaweco Sport pens.

Manufacture: The casing is hard, clear plastic with Kaweco printed in white along the outside. The internal push/pull rod is hard black plastic, while the end of the casing and the end of the piston rod are chrome metal. The chrome metal end of the black rod has an easy to grip machined edge.

Measurements: It measures 33mm long when closed, and 53mm when open.

Capacity: It holds .5ml of ink when full.

Details: I fitted one of these into my red and black AC Sport. It fitted so securely onto the feed that when I tried to turn it slightly to show the Kaweco branding while I took the photograph of it fitted in the pen, it unscrewed the nib unit. So I can confirm it fits into my AC Sport really tightly. It took me a couple of draws to properly fill the converter with ink from the bottle, but that seems to be common with these tiny converters. I just love it! The fact that I can now use bottled ink in my Kaweco Sport pens without having to use the squeezy converter, or refill cartridges with a syringe is great!

Cost and availability So far I have only spotted them in stock on the Appelboom.com web site at a cost of €5.50 inclusive of EU tax. I'm sure other web-sites will get them in stock soon.

Awesome! I've been waiting to read a review about the new converter.

 

Only thing that I'm concerned about: based on what I can find on Google, short international cartridges carry 0.75ml of ink. This converter would actually hold less at 0.5ml.

This is great news. I love my Kaweco Sport. Now that there's a converter for it I think I'll buy another one in a different nib size.

 

Given the popularity of a the Sport, I think you should post this on the "first stop" fountain pen forum.

Given the size of the pen, the capacity is not that bad compared to other converters. Here are a few http://www.nibs.com/fountain-pen-converters.htm
There is another thing to be mentioned. For practical reasons, the ink 'mileage' is never mentioned in reviews but a standard cartridge in a Sport writes almost twice as far as the same cartridge in, for example, a HERO 7032 ( 9 vs 5 pages A5)
I might purchase one (because I purchase almost anything with KaWeCo on it) but these pens are for use on the road. Not sure it is practical to carry bottles.
The first generation Sports were piston fillers btw, that would be a big step for penkind

i also just found out today about the new mini converter which is a good news as i have held back from purchasing the clear sport demonstrator because you can only use carts. I will get 1 tomorrow in singapore.

 

btw does mini this fits the liliput ?

Got my mini-piston @ Cult Pens (no affiliation).

 

The large Kaweco branded twist converter (that fits the Dia2) sucks,... but sadly it's not ink.

I experienced problems with this unit, from the word go: ink adhesion, air locks, profuse bubbles & a poor ink flow to the feed,...despite being disassembled, thoroughly cleaned & flushed.

 

Went through three of the large Kaweco converters in a row, but eventually gave up on them & returned back to either the squeezy bulb or using cartridges. At least with these two options I was getting decent performance from my Kaweco pen.

When I saw the new Kaweco mini-piston being advertised, I jumped at the chance of trying one out.

So what's the word on this, is the third time a charm for Kaweco Sport converters?

 

A well functioning converter for the Sport seems to be a veritable Grail quest, though there have been some quite successful home-brew solutions: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/220288-modified-converter-for-use-in-kaweco-sport/ (see esp from post 13ff). Now the real success story will be to find something that will work with the Lilliput.

Interesting thread. I had a chat with someone awhile back on the Goulet Pens website, and was told that the converters were being discontinued because they weren't all that satisfactory. I'm now wondering if this is the same model as those, or an upgrade. I really kinda liked the look of the purple Kaweco Sports, but had hesitated because I would not be able to use a converter (and the aluminum body pens can't be converted into eyedroppers the way the plastic ones can).

Correction:

the Kaweco mini-piston converter does not fit on the nipple of a Bock 060 screw-in nib unit that comes on a Dia2 pen.

I should have read the Cult Pens site more carefully. This converter is designed to be used only with the resin bodied Kaweco Sport pens.

on the pic above it is shown in an AC so I guess it would also fit the AL since they have the same nib/feed-unit? And since the Dia2 also uses the same unit, I don't see why it wouldn't fit.
