What Now?

Hi all
For about the past month and a bit I've been practicing writing in Copperplate because I love the look and style of it and always wanted to write in it. But now I'm getting to the point where I'm becoming more confident at it, so I'm wondering where I go from here to get a little more from the art and use it in a creative and (hopefully) fulfilling way?

If I just carry on writing sentences and doing drills I'm sure I'm likely to get bored, and end up dropping it to chase another dream.

So what do you all do to add a bit of spice?

Copperplate is the classic wedding-invitation hand.Does a friend or family member need invitations done? Can be quite the wedding gift. I keep my journals in italic but Copperplate would make for a lovely classical style of journal.

Hi Randal

Thanks for your suggestions. No future weddings that I'm aware of on the horizon, but writing a journal in copperplate sounds like a very good idea to me as I already keep a journal for daily life moans, dreams, ambitions, recent events, and people analysis and such like.

Although I would have to be much better than I am now to write at such a speed to make it worthwhile otherwise it may take half a day per journal entry, but that's definitely something for the future and on the right right lines for what I'm looking for.

Well, Bluey, sounds as if you are doing well. Oh, welcome to FPN! We love seeing new members here. Another fine thing to do is to post a few pictures of a quote or two on the board. Sounds as if one of the threads in Handwriting and Calligraphy Discussions would be just up your alley.

What tools are you using? A fountain pen? Dip pen? Straight or oblique holder? We would love to hear from you.

For the dip pens I've started off using some William-something-or-other kit which included nibs and a holder with a lightning shaped type nib for copperplate, but now I'm (trying!) to use a Gillott 303(and oblique holder) because it's got the hairlines that I'm wanting which the other nib didn't. I'm still working on trying to avoid the nib stabbing into the page on most upstrokes.

That's certainly a very real possibility, and would be best if I decorated them too which is something that I haven't got around to yet but maybe in the next year or two if and when I'm good enough.
