Resac A Waterman C/f Converter?

Recommended Posts

My latest 1960s Waterman came in the mail today (my first actual C/F) and the sac in the converter that came with it has sadly long-since gone hard and crumbly.

As I was able to successfully disassemble it without destroying it, I'm hoping to be able to put a new sac in there and get it up and running. After all, the C/F converters I already have aren't going to last forever, and my old Watermans are my absolute favorites.

Has anyone else done this and had it work? If so, what size sac did you use?

I've re-saced a couple of Sheaffer converters, so I don't see why you couldn't do the same with a Waterman. Measure the nipple in 64th of an inch and that will give you the sac size.

Thanks! As my calipers are apparently somewhere other than where I last put them, I resorted to squinting at a ruler and have ordered a 12, a 13, and a 14. Hopefully, one of them can be made to work.

I've re-sacced a few Parker stainless converters, and I imagine the process is not dis-similar. Just make sure the sac you choose fits all the way up the converter cover as well as over the nipple.

Yep, and that's proving to be the trickier bit. I'm going to need to try a 10 and hope that works. It might be too slim a converter to really be able to do this with, which would be sad.

There is also the other approach . . . make a bulb filler out of an old CF cartridge.

I did that for a pen that would not fit any of my international converters, and plan to do that for my Cross Classic Century. Cross did not make a converter for this pen.

Hi Mohmlet,

Did you find correct sac size finally to repair a Waterman CF Converter?

Regards.

René.

BTW, there is a company that sells Waterman C/F converters that they make in-house.  I have purchased them and used them.  They work well.

The C/Fs are some of my favorite pens...

I am restoring one now and a size 14, the smallest I currently have, is too wide to fit inside the converter's body/shield. Size 14 = 14/64 inches = ~5.6 mm. I measured the inner diameter with very cheap, plastic analog calipers of questionable accuracy and got 5.1mm. Size 12 (12/64 inches = ~4.8mm) *should* fit but I will probably order size 11, too, just in case.

I couldn't find it on their website, currently. Did you see it there previously?

Yes, I do see it under "U.S. Made Waterman Parts."  However, the website says the item is out of stock.

I recommend you call them and find out when they will be in stock again.  Or perhaps encourage them to produce more!

Pentooling/Dale Beebe doesn't make them. Those are original C/F converters.

Does that mean that he is now unable to get more?

Ron, would a sac from Pen Sac Company help?  I've used their products to resac a Sheaffer converter.  Just askin'

Yes.  You should be able to use a standard sac from the PSC in it.  If a #14 sac fits (I haven't had one of these apart) you may be able to use one of David Nishimura's #14 PVC sacs, which he sells to restore the debutante 51 pens.  The plug should come out of the case.  Put a drill that fits in the middle of the hole to keep it from getting crushed.  A little talc on the outside of the new sac will help it to slide into the case.   You will of course have to trim the length of the sac to fit, and should secure it with shellac.  If you use a PVC sac, use a cotton swab soaked in alcohol to swab out the inside of the sac to remove any mold release compound that might be left.

I don't know if Dale will be able to get more.

Excellent tip to put a drill bit in the hole to keep it from getting crushed.  All I have to do is remember!

Per my response yesterday, a #14 sac does not fit. I currently don't have a smaller sac. I measured the inner diameter of the case at 5.1mm, so, fingers crossed, a #12 sac should fit.

I am trying to restore one now. This is all I've got. Should there be a J bar or some other spring mechanism, please?
