Platinum 3776 Century

The platinum 3776 century.

What a beautiful pen that greets you when you open the box. That semi transparent burgundy is so fine.

My initial concern with this pen was, that it would be too short and that I would need it to be posted to fit my hand, I hate drawing with posted pens. Luckily it's not and it lies beautifully in my hand.

Happy so far, I loaded it with platinum carbon black ink (my ink have to be waterproof, as I more than often add watercolours to my drawings). And got started on my first test drive - here comes trouble. First of I was surprised of how thin the line is ( I got an ef nib), secondly it surprised me how poor the feed is. To but it nicely, my lines was horrendous, inconsistent, skipping, you lose the line when moving the pen side ways. And the amount of pressure I needed, will kill my hands.

Now to be fair, I normally use a TWSBI 580, which is a dream pen for drawing, even straight out of the box, so the platinum pen had some expectation to live up to.

I have had the pen placed up side down for 8 hours now, and finished my first sketch using the pen. And yes, the ink flow has improved, the line is more consistant and I don't need to use a lot of pressure to get a decent line. But still, no where near the lines I get from the TWSBI pens I normally user, but I see a bright future for this pen ahead.

My next move might be cleaning the pen thoroughly and changing the ink to either Noodles or De Atramentis. Or keep drawing with this ink and hope it will improve. I haven't made up my mind yet, but the Pen does looks very promising.

Stay tuned for an update.

Cleaning any new pen first is usually a good idea.

I got one with a UEF nib. It's loaded with words - All of them.

I didn't know you could get one with pictures too!

Any way to upgrade to a words and pictures version or do I have to buy an additional pen for pictures???

Thanks for the review.

One sketch later.

The flow is getting better. I decided to see if I could "draw" the flow better and it's is getting better, but it's not there yet. The line I can produce now is significantly better, it's not skipping and it's more consistant, but I'm not quite satisfied yet - but I can feel the love for this pen is slowly coming closer. I think the pen needs a thorough cleaning to get better.

Stay tuned, for more updates.

As a long time user of Platinum 3776 for drawing, I can tell you that flow will improve and settle. My first 3776 was like yours on the first day, but got better quickly.

I just recently bought another one, in burgundy like yours, and it started modestly, almost shy at first, but is getting much more relaxed with use :-)

The only difference is I prefer the SF (soft fine) nib as it can give very thin lines as your EF, but also gives a bit when pressed lightly. It's not a flex pen in vintage terms, but there is a small amount of line variation. Although I tried many different pens, Platinum SF nib is my tool of choice.

But I'm pretty sure your EF will serve you equally well as your lovely drawings show already!

@Pictogramax.. I have missed your lovely sketches. The OP talent rivals yours... I almost confuse his sketch for one of yours..

@Tomas.. You sir, are a very talented artist.

Thanks, and you're right, the pen is a lot better already.

Love to see you're drawings, where do you post them?

Take care
