A Sad Tale

Recommended Posts

Some of you may remember this.

Last year I picked up a Parker "51" quite cheaply.

Tidied it up a bit and mentioned that I would loan it, a month at a time, to FPN members who wanted to try out a "51"

Richard Binder saw the post and mailed me with a very magnanimous offer "send it to me first & I'll do a job on it, free"

Obviously off it went.

Came back from Richard completely re-done, as sweet as a nut

Thought to myself - at least people will experience a "51" at it's best.

At Richard's suggestion I popped a journal in with the pen, to accompany it on its travels and to scan & post as it went.

I posted it early in January, and received a delighted:

I have it, hurrah, picked it up from the post office this afternoon. I went yesterday but it appearst hey close at 3pm, so I have it with me now, have written a couple of lines with it, seems wonderful so far, the nib is so smooth, right I will go off and take the rest of todays notes with it.

a couple of days later.

(Extract only from full message, name etc. deleted.)

It is now April 24th.

Despite several polite mails and PMs, initially answered, more recently ignored, there is no sign of the pen.

To those (and yes, I still have your names) who were waiting, I can only say sorry.

I have already let Richard know why I apparently can't be bothered letting him know about the pen & journal and their travels.

To the person who has the pen - if you by chance read this, please let me know what is happening. A PM to say "Sorry, I lost it" would be better than silence.

You and Richard have stars in your crown for your magnanimous undertaking.

Boo/hiss :angry2: to whomever it was who, at this point, seems to have taken advantage

of your generosity. The idea of a tryout "51" was wonderful, and just imagine the

potential tales the journal would have told. I'm still hoping the pen and journal

show back up so you can continue the experiment.

Edited because I was having trouble with the emoticons.

The idea of a journal spinning round and round the earth, wow. And the entries it would have would make it a book worthy of reading. And every new possessor would have to keep it longer just to read the entries. Oh what a shame, heartbreaking.

Perhaps unfortunately I still retain just enough faith in other people to think that there may be a reasonable explanation for this :(

What I do regret is that there are a few other people who fully expected to be able to try out a 'Binderised' Parker "51" and decide for themselves if all the talk about this classic is true, for just the price of a stamp.

What a disappointment ... it was, and is, a terrific idea - let's hope that the pen and journal find their way back to Murphy Towers and subsequent redeployment...

It's very unfortunate. One of the things that makes this a community is trust and goodwill between members. Let's hope that the person who currently has the pen is simply a bad procrastinator and is ready to ship the pen to the next recipient.

Ruaridhri,

[ont]In the absence of a proper explanation (after repeated attempts), you should reveal this miscreants name on FPN so the offender can be held to the public(on this forum) ridicule so richly deserved!!

We really should give this person the benefit of the doubt-- what good would calling names do, if he or she actually still reads stuff on FPN? Maybe there was some sort of an emergency.

& Great original ideas, I must say! B)

Well, over on Pentrace, I have on 4 occasions, tried to start travelling Journals. Went and purchased Moleskin journals and sent them out to people who said thay would want to recieve them write in it and send them on. Till date, not one single person has confirmed recieving the journals or what they did with them. I bet some folks gave themselves a gift of a new Moleskin journal for free. :(

You are now in the full awareness of why Peg and I have decided to devote so much time and energy to Dachshund Rescue. Persons, individually, for the most part, are just great. But there are some that are just, to quote Daffy Duck...dishpickible..

Peg and I to help out two folks and they turned on us and made our lives hell to the point of distraction.

The dachsies give back in kind and snuggle nice.

R--I have a spare P51 I would be willing to donate to FPN for another try at introducing the folks who do not know the wonder of the pen to it. If you are willing, contact me back channel. There are GoodPenFolk here. One person's misbegotten actions should not deprive others of the Joy of P51...

For the moment I have to go with Hana* - it is possible that circumstances I'm unaware of have caused the delay, hence "no names, no pack drill".

I do have the recipient's address and in a week or two I'll send a polite reminder by registered post.

Hopefully nothing bad has happened to the person themselves - and I'm not being sarcastic.

I posted this whole thing mainly for the benefit of anyone thinking I couldn't be bothered following up on the offer I made ;)

Really nice piece of news - a certain FPN Member (I'm not sure yet if they are prepared to be named, more later) PMd me with the offer of a replacement loaner, which I gratefully accepted.

How nice is that !!!

At the moment my own 'stash' of "51"s are all of personal relevance for one reason or another.

Soon as it arrives I'll pick up another journal & away we go again :)

* Some time back I made a haymes of ANES 010 myself - posted it to an address that was out of date - see Here - so I know accidents can happen

Bill,

A loaner "51" with a journal is a great idea (although, I plan on buying one from Mr. Binder as soon as he makes them available through his website :) )/

It's sad that someone appears to have taken advantage of it. :(

Maybe, for the next one (if you do it), keep an online listing of the people involved, and update it showing who currently has it and who the next people in line are?

Ruaidhrí,

I'm sorry you've had to experience that lack of caring from the person who has your "demo" Parker 51. Was this a board member that has been around for a while? Maybe they wound up in a difficult situation. In any case, if you've got someone offering up a replacement loaner, that's fantastic--a true testament that hope is not all lost! ;)

I don't think it's been a year quite yet. I once met a person who had pretty recently come out of a five year coma-- he probably had to catch up on a lot of things. (Very slim chance, I know, but things happen.)

& If the person's just procrastinating, it could be that the person's so embarrassed about the delay that he or she's dug him or herself into an even deeper hole.

I wonder if it'd help to have a public thread for this P '51' project, just like for the traveling journals. It may deter procrastination and/or theft.

What a great idea! Please don't lose faith in people, I have been so impressed with the kindness and integrity of the people I have dealt with here, I would hate to see that go away. I just took the plunge and bought a a nice green aero 51, and have now bought another in blue. I'd be interested in what people have to say about a Binder-ized one.
