Omas Ogiva Cocktail Spitting Ink...?

I see posts about OMAS Ogiva ink flow sometimes skipping, but none that mention inconsistent flow in the other direction, sooooo....

The pen is new to me---Brian Anderson listed it for sale through the store at a discount, since it had been previously inked. The first few hours, it wrote beautifully, but now it's kind of blurping/spitting too much ink at random times. This isn't a case of normal shading, where additional ink sits at the bottom of downstrokes; instead, too much ink is expelled randomly, often to a degree that saturates the paper or fills in looped letters (lower case e, for example).

At first, I assumed a small thread was caught in the tines, but upon closer inspection with a 30x loupe, nothing can be seen.

Is this normal for OMAS...a known problem when pairing OMAS and Noodler's ink?

Would love to hear what others have to say, since I truly adore the pen otherwise.

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

Not normal. There's an outside chance it could be the ink, sometimes a pen and ink just don't get along. But, I'd guess it probably has more to do with something wrong with either the nib or the feed. I'm not that familiar with the nib setting on the Ogiva but I've had quite a few pens that blobbed ink like that when the nib was not set all the way into the pen. You might try *gently* pressing the nib into the section to make sure it isn't loose. Otherwise, I'd contact the seller and see if you can have the pen looked at under warranty as the Ogiva is an expensive pen and I'd be afraid to do too much tinkering.

I have an Omas Soleterre. When I use the Iro inks, no problem. But I used the Kobe and it seemed to do some odd things. So I would suggest trying a different ink. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

I have several Omas pens, and they definitely do not spurt ink like that. I would thoroughly clean it and try a different ink. If that doesn't work, I would contact Brian. He fixed a flow issue for me one time in a Delta pen I bought from them.

Be careful if you decide to mess with the nib/feed yourself, those Omas nibs are fragile since they are soft and springy.

What in is it?

Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses. Love the ink--behaves well in other pens.

A fix could be something as simple as a thorough flushing. Since it was inked previously, there could be sludge, dried ink, shimmer particles; who knows?

When I match ink to pen, I tend to look for this inconsistency. As a matter of fact, I do wish all of my pens can do this with all of my inks. My Pilot Custome 92 does this with several inks, my new Omas Burkina does this with Montblanc Irish Green. My Danitrio also does this with many inks; I have Tsuki-yo on it because it's the most obvious. Your pen and ink combo is more extreme than all of my pens. I think flushing the pen, switching the ink, this will go away. For me though, this is awesome, how am I going to get shading out of XF and XXF if not for this now?

Did another flushing, then tried in a different ink (this time, Diamine Oxblood). Same problem, unfortunately. If anything, it's almost more pronounced, dispersing copious amounts of ink...and I write quite quickly, so imagine what would happen if I slowed down. :: :yikes:::

Brian and Lisa will return home from the L.A. show tonight, so I'll give him a call in the next couple of days to see if he has some insight on the matter.

Love everything about this pen...except the way it writes. Go figure.
