How Do I Match Nibs To Pens? (Looking For Manifold Xf)

Hello, in searching for a manifold nib, I realize I know nothing about Esterbrook pens. Basically, if I go to ebay and buy a manifold nib, will it fit any Esterbrook pen? If not, how do I find out?

Even though this topic is simply a newbie Esterbrook topic, I don't mind if it diverges into a manifold discussion, since that is my only reason for being interested in an Esterbrook pen. :)

The manifold nibs were to go through multiple carbon copies. Multiple carbons haven't been used in recent years, especially with the dawn of document imaging, because you can print all the copies you want. The manifold nibs are stronger than usual, a good feature, because they don't get bent as easily. 9460 and 9461 would be examples. They are available in the market, and are good nibs. They fit all the Esterbrook pens I know of.

That's what I am trying to find out, if I get a manifold esterbrook nib, will it fit any random esterbrook pen I may pick on ebay, or will it fit pens from other brands as well?

Yes, any Esterbrook nib will fit any esterbrook pen from 1932-1971.

I thought we agreed at the last meeting that we would return to 'standard practice' and match the nib collar color to barrel color as intended.

What changed?

Did I miss the part where the ex-fine nibs went on all the small pens, and only the large pens got the broad nibs?

Dang it, the secretary left all that out of the minutes!

Ink color, you match the INK COLOR to the barrel of the pen.

Thanks for the additional confirmation.

I am guessing all the additional comments and humor are implying a duh! moment? :ninja:

Not that, but the only thing you don't know now is the secret handshake. There's a rule book in here.

Manifold nibs are also great for ball pen writers. So they can press HARD like they do with a ball pen, without damaging the nib.

I have long suspected this field of pendom was too complicated and arcane. I have been trying to position the milkshakes and Esterbrook purse pens on my wife's Wicca altar, but I don't seem to get it right, and some black cat, defective with white spots got in the house and sprayed. Gadzooks, what a candy bar.

Hi,

It may be the case that the Ink Putti have become discombobulated by the position of the Esties. Perhaps if you put those Esties to use harmony would prevail.

Yes. We tend to get a bit silly at times.

And yes, the entire range of Esterbrook nib units fit on any model from the Dollar pens through the Safari models. There *have* been discussions about whether the larger size 9xxx nibs look oversized on the small SJ models, but I found one "in the wild" last summer with a 9128 (flexible extra fine) nib on it, at an antiques mall about an hour from where I live.

When I first found my way here, about four years ago, some people were still treating Esties as 3rd tier brand pens. I thought (and still think) they're wrong. Especially after acquiring some *real* 3rd tiers (a few Arnolds and a Wearever -- although the Wearever writes well enough, and was free). But there are a lot of others who recognize Esties for being good pens, where all the R&D went into the nibs.
