A request was made for a quick side by side comparison of two Bung Box (Sailor) inks: Tears of a Clown and Sweet Potato Purple.

I apologize for the distracting line, I did the swabs and splatters separately and taped them on.

Notes: Tears of a Clown was inked in a standard med. TWSBI-Eco. There are no modifications on the nib. The Sweet Potato Purple was inked into a Shaeffer Javelin, modified with a magical Art Nib's mod,, and is a stub and somewhat flexy.

Ink Characteristics: Both were very wet inks, richly saturated, well lubricated so even a stiff nib like the Eco's danced across the page. The small square in the middle are the two inks, in a single series of passes, abutting. Neither ink feathered, bled through. Both dried (on Tomoe) in the 15-18 second range.

Paper: Tomoe River White

Sheen: Two pictures taken on an iPhone. The sheen is identical to me, highest key is a lime yellow, middle key of the sheen is Chartreuse, the lowest key falls to olive. Amazing stuff.

Splatters:

First is the splatter of Tears of a Clown:

Here is the splatter of Sweet Potato Purple:

I couldn't get them at the exact same angle in the same amount of light because I had no one to take the pic. But the sheen is the same.

Hope you find this helpful.

Tears of a Clown looks like Yama-Budo to me, and writes the same way, even a chisel would glide across a page if it was coated in that ink.

About 15-25 mins.

Just to clarify, the Tears of a Clown seems more impressive. That's because I was liberal with the splatter. I was very miserly with the Sweet Potato Purple as I only have a half bottle left.

I taped the paper down and took a pic of them together.

I like the splatters, it's a new take on testing inks.

However, why is it that when I saw the title "Bung Box: Clowns Vs Taters", I immediately thought - webgeckos?

I have bottles of uboth. SPP is lovely - more purple than Tears, which shows reddish to me. SPP also has far more sheen than Tears in general writing use. This is SPP on standard bond paper (freshly written and after 5 minutes drying time). And that's with a rubbish phone camera; the sheen IRL is far more dramatic.

Interesting yours is so much darker than mine. I had thought initially it must be close to Tears or it wouldn't have come up.

I've always found purple the most difficult colour to replicate accurately photographically. Almost as difficult as photographing a scent :-) :-)

My pics were more about showing the sheen than the colour. IRL SPP is lighter and more shaded on the page. But definitely still a richer tone than I see on your pic.

The vagaries of electronics for showing and viewing ink colours are why I always treat ink reviews with caution, and a big pinch of scepticism. But that's just me. Please feel free to consider my pics similarly. :-D

Nope. Its definitely in the dark red-mahogany-purple with hints of brown. I haven't sealed up your box yet, want me to add a fat sample?

:) I own that one. I also have a dried out stash of the real Penman Ruby. I'm excited to try the Sweet 'Taters (can I try Yellow too?)

Jesse gave me two vials so I can send you one. Its is pretty crazy yellow though. I found it a bit more muted in a 14kt gold vintage nib.

I was never able to get a bottle of SPP... I did try for at least a couple of years. Is a seasonal ink, only available at a specific time, the first year I totally spaced out and forgot, the second year I remember but it was sold out .. and the third year (last year).. all hell broke lose and either was sold out or you had to pay twice for it.. :(

But,,, I should be honest with myself, I am not crazy about the color and I was only chasing the sheen on this one. Tears of a clown is more suited for my taste, and I do have a bottle of that.

The headline for this thread, "Bung Box: Clowns Vs. Taters" may be one of the most clever and enticing sub-forum headlines ever.
