To be fair, I've paid that recently for pens to be shipped from well-respected US sellers to the UK. Postage has become very expensive.

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

Just decided to take the risk, ordered a Dolcevita Frederico Media bamboo with 25% off from their website. Total 30 + 3 tax + 10 shipping = 43 .

The contact was very nice and the pen is a beauty. - considering what you get in the 33 pricerange normally, I'm very satisfied.

Haven't inked the pen yet, that has to wait a bit, but the nib looks pretty nice as well.

It's steel, because there were no other options available, but for a first try this was an overall good choice I guess.

I had a bad experience buying from ebay from them. The posting mentioned shipping was included, the pen was around 70 EUR and for an additional 50 you caould get a stub nib. I bought it and sent them a message according to their instructions using the ebay messaging facility. I asked them to add the stub nib and bill me through paypal. I received a paypal request for 119.90 which I paid. I received the pen very promptly and it came with a fine nib. I contacted them to ask for the nib to be exchanged and they said they never received the message asking for the stub nib and that the 49.90 was for shipping.

I sent them the message screenshot to prove I had sent it and also copy-pasted where their listing said that shipping was included in the price and they simply told me that I could send the fine nib, pay 50 EUR and they would send me back a stub nib after they had received the fine nib in as new condition. I filed a claim with paypal and paypal said I could return the pen, at my expense and that they would refund me once Martemodean had confirmed reception of the pen in as new condition. I chose to keep the pen and am trying other stub nibs in it. i did not want to risk them saying they did not receive the pen, especially after they had denied, several times to have received my message, which is still archived in the ebay system.

Trying to find an explanation where they are not intentionally trying to rob people, it may just be inexperience with the ebay platform, but the way tehy (and paypal BTW) handled the problemleft much to be desired.

70 for pen and 50 for stub nib. If I then got an invoice for around 120 and assumed it covered these two items, I would wonder why I wasn't being charged for the shipping. Did you have reason to expect free shipping?

Yes, the fact that the listing clearly stated 'Shipping included'. I was expeting to be billed for 120, when I saw 119.90 I should have asked, but I just did not realize the amount was not the exact one I was expeting.

I had an eye on the bamboo on ebay - white cap and barrel end, rhodium trim. Then I saw the same bamboo model on their website and even nicer with gold trim and black features for 43 all inclusive, so it was a no brainer.

Also I was appalled by their shipping costs on ebay.

I rather pass than paying unreasonable high shipping costs - unless it's the global shipping program. That is a good option.

Oh, and btw. for a 33 pen, the bamboo media is absolutely stunning.

That's a surprise. On any given day, MM lists hundreds of items on ebay, and I have never seem "shipping included"; on the contrary, people tend to express concerns about their shipping costs. At any rate, they obviously did not see the "shipping included" view.

At the time they had some listings that immediately showed the shipping costs and they were high and others that had 'See item description' in the shipping cost area near the top. The item description said shipping included. According to them, this means that the shipping will be included in the final billing.

Something very odd seems to be going on in your case. I have taken a look at one of MM eBay orders, and the presentation of the details is no different than from my other eBay orders. In particular:

* in my eBay account I can clearly see what the charge is for the item and what the charge is for shipping.

* that i also the case when I look at the corresponding details in the corresponding item in my Paypal account.

You seem to be saying that you were charged 49.90 for shipping but that was never indicated anywhere, and you were surprised to earn of it.

Unfortunately, the auction ended of May 26th and I cannot open the listing anymore, I know that this is not the usual way Martemodena lists their sales today. At that time, as I said, some items were immediately showing the shipping charges and others had the comment 'see listing' in the shipping cost section.

What I do have is the messages I exchanged with Martemodena, Here is the one where they offer a 'solution':

New message from: martemodena http://p.ebaystatic.com/aw/icon/iconTopRatedSeller_19x18.png(7,280http://pics.ebaystatic.com/aw/pics/icon/iconGreenStar_25x25.gif)

Dear Customer,

thanks again for this message.

As it is clearly indicated in the insertion: "full insurance shipment included", this refers to the insurance of your shipent, of course.

About the message, I'm really sorry but we didn't receive any message from you, I've checked at all but nothing found about this message.

If you want, you can sand us back your nib ("must be returned in the same condition as received (i.e. Unworn, unused).", as it is written in the insertion), we'll send you the invoice of 50 USD for your STUB, and then we'll send you back this one, paying all of the shipping costs.

If you need something else, please contact me.

Sincerely,
Andrea

After a closer inspection of my new Delta, I noticed slightly misaligned tines, nothing I couldn't fix in a few minutes. Unfortunately I've cut my fingernails a few days ago, lol.

After having tried the pen, I can report back,

Ok, even with my short fingernails, this was an issue of a few minutes. Dip tested and it's nice.

After having written dry all my currently used pens, this will be added to the rotation.

It has an F nib and will be used for sketching. This usually smoothes the nib very quickly further.

Unless you have deleted them, your eBay "account" information and Paypal information should still show the details of the transactions. Mine still have details from MM purchases around 3 and 6 months ago.

That said, the problem is not hard to see in the stilted language of ""full insurance shipment included". You took it to mean one thing, they took it to mean another thing. But what they then say seems clearer (even if not by much:;

If you want, you can sand us back your nib ("must be returned in the same condition as received (i.e. Unworn, unused).", as it is written in the insertion),we'll send you the invoice of 50 USD for your STUB, and then we'll send you back this one, paying all of the shipping costs.

The stub costs $50 more, as understood by both parties. You are to send back the current nib. They will then invoice you $50 and send you a stub nib. They will also pay for the cost of shipping the stub.

All that seems quite reasonable to me, and I don't see where the problem is, except perhaps for the lost-in-translation "full insurance shipment included". Your argument seems to be that you took that to mean free shipping, but what do the relevant eBay/Paypal invoices say.

I should add that while my dealings with MM have generally been positive, I would not consider communication as one of their strongest points.

I've just ordered my third Federico from MM. I bought the first from eBay but the last two direct. As a mailshot subscriber, I get sent special offers virtually every day (which often last only for 24 hours) and have waited for the pen I want to go on offer. DHL delivery to the UK cost me €12 and it'll be here in 3 days (if past experience is anything to go by). Shipping is vastly cheaper than on eBay. The first two pens are utter beauties worth every penny and more and I hope the third will also exceed my expectations as the first two have done.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

@Seney724. The pen was recently disassembled and cleaned, but the nib and feed were not properly inserted into the holder. I'm in Maryland.
    • Diablo 26 Aug 21:32
@Seney724. The nib section needs to be adjusted properly.

Hello, could someone recommend a reliable venue: on line or brick and mortar in Fairfax, VA or Long Island, NY to purchase the soft parts and a converter to restore my dad's Sheaffer Legacy? please. Thanks a mill.

Back to FPN after 14 years. First thing I noticed is that I could not see a FS forum. What has changed? 🤔

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
