Hero Wing Sung 659 Questions - Baoer & Hero Suggestions, Too!

after reading this thread i still cant make out or find any real stand on the fact that can the hero wing sung 659 use the following;

- International cartridges (both long and short)

- international converters (both screw or slide type) <--- priority

- any of the proprietary converter / cartridges

is it stated on some site/online shop that it uses a somewhat special version of an international converter and is international standard compatible but by just looking at the pen i have some doubts. Mind some kind soul confirm on this ?

Scavenging around the net for information as I am thinking to get 2 fountain pen (can be any kind) 1 for work 1 for "off-work" after my loyal pen decides to breakdown on me.

thank ahead

I would really only use a pen with a cap that seals properly, like a Platinum Preppy. You can either refill and empty Platinum cartridge, or get a converter for one.

1, no, and no.

2. no, and I can't find my crappy slide converter.

3. a Pilot squeeze converter that my 78g came with has slightly to great a circumference to get into the section. a Pilot cartridge with enter the section, and partially post onto the nipple. The nipple does not include the pointed bit necessary to actually pierce the Pilot cart. I have yet to ink up with a pre-punctured Pilot cart to test for excessive wetness indicative of a poor seal.

4. Definitely isn't international standard - hole is wider than an international standard cart opening.

EDIT to 3. Hilariously, the Pilot cart will fit in the F nib section unit, but not the free EF section unit.

oh wow i did not expect a reply mostly would just ignore... anyway many thanks flounder that certainly clears up any doubts i have on this pen.

So it only takes HERO converters right?

This means i would not be getting it as i dislike having to look for specific parts everytime the pen breaksdown which is sad as i kinda like the demonstrator version of this pen.

Time to look for other demonstrator FP.

I don't think it takes regular Hero converters either, because those are usually international standard size.

For a really cheap demonstrator, I recommend a Platinum Preppy as dcwaites suggested. The converter costs around twice as much as the pen, but it works for all Platinum pens. I just use a syringe and refill the original free cartridge it came with. I've had the cap or barrel crack on two of these, but that problem got solved when I started wrapping them in clear packing tape beforehand.

For a little more money but still quite cheap, I highly recommend the demonstrator version of the Nemosine Singularity. There is a wide selection of nib sizes and you could always swap nibs later. It's a classy looking pen with a really good converter included.

It comes with a converter, which is somewhat peculiar in design. An internal lip prevents the seal from reaching the last 1.5cm of the cylinder. A very large, singular looking agitator is inside the converter. It sort of resembles an unused rivet in shape.

I would be interested to see what kind of carts this could ever use. Every cartridge I've ever seen has either a ball or some kind of seal that needs to be pushed or pierced, yet this Lucky design has nothing to perform these functions...

The light tent yesterday, it appears to be adequate enough for evening photos, so I'll review the 659 soon. Here's a shot of the demo cap on my 78G.

Parting shot - I had pretty severe flow problems with my Preppy, back in the day.

Great! Look forward to seeing how these two compare.

I know what you mean about the preppies. Maybe it's a hit-or-miss thing like with most Chinese pens. I've had 4 preppies (all 03 fine nibs) and only the last one had flow issues.

I can't wait for your review of the WS 659. I'm buying it or not depends on your review.

it'll be best if you could also tell us the dimension (L x W x H) of the odd sized screw converter.

@truth

Thanks for the recommendation, yes i have a few demonstrator models on my radar now, i like seeing lots of ink sloshing around in the barrel but not too much till messy like an eyedropper hence i am rather locked on this 3;

- wing Sung 659 (mostly due to all it's parts being clear/transparent even the feed)

- Romus/click majestic Clear (clear large transparent barrel ... imagine it filled with Iroshizuku Ama-Iro / Ku-Jaku or Vert Reseda turquoise!!)

- San Wen Tong Bi (TWSBI) Diamond 580 Clear ( a solid awesome demo pen i tested at the pen shop ink up with MB Dandy Turquoise, i was momentary in heaven. Price wise high side!!)

I have a TWSBI 580 Clear and it's lovely (but too big to post which bothers me a little). It holds a lot of ink and the clear barrel shows it off well. Unfortunately, I'm still trying to get some Noodler's Black out of the corners in the ink compartment. :unsure: Their new Eco pen might be a cheaper option and still has the demonstrator benefit.

I would like to hear from you first hand on the 580 ... which nib have you currently installed on it ? i tried the medium and yes feels smooth but a little on the wet side. furthermore 580 is design that the cap stays off the pen anyway you can properly post it too or risk damaging the screw filling mechanism. I too hate it when the previous ink is still present and by the way I would not be getting the ECO so soon as i am waiting for the FULL Clear ECO demonstrator which are currently in testing stage.

does it use International or pilot cartridges?

Flounder did mentioned before scroll up and read. Does not takes international cartridges and only accepts pre-punctured pilot cartridges as the nipple in the wing sung does not pierce the pilot cart.

Review is coming along okay, just want to write with the pen long enough to get a good sense of feeding/any hard start issues etc.

The more I look at the Lucky's converter, the more I think they were trying to copy the con-50 (going solely by photos on the interwebs, I don't have a con-50).

Thanks for your work! If you can post some close-up pics of the converter, I can compare it with the con-50. I use several of them.

Someone did a little comparison elsewhere online:

Thanks for posting the pic with measurements for the converter.

I don't have any calipers, but lining the CON-50 up with a ruler I see that it is just slightly under 60mm (59,5mm I guess).

The biggest issue, width of the opening, looks just under 7mm across at the widest point.

Hope that helps!

I got one of these and my converter does not particularly like to work - you have to push on it while turning, which seems to me as if that means it is not working properly. It also seems to me not to go down as far as I would have thought it would.

I have not tried a cartridge in either section.

There is something about the pen I like, and I really need a light pen so I am mostly waiting to see how the plastic holds up, etc...

Thanks Truthpil - looks like the copied the con-50 and used a conventional sized converter knob to keep costs down.

So far, the nibs on my examples stand out. They're both Pilot smooth at high and low angles, the tipping is fairly true to size, and the tine gap taper is good. My converter takes 3 cycles to fill completely - or mostly completely.

As a demonstrator it is a right pig to photograph! All reflections and dazzles. Most of the photos are taken and the text written up, the review should be up on the weekend.

That's good to know about the nibs. I've been concerned after one reviewer said the metal is thinner than that of the Pilot nibs.
I've had several cheap Chinese pens with nibs made out of thin junk metal that bent with just a little pressure.

I've been using my WS 659 as part of my EDC for the last week, it's been great. I wrote up some of my thoughts here, thought I'd share.

I find the Fine nib a little wider than the Metro's Fine, closer to the Metro's Medium. And the EF is pretty close to my Penmanship, though weirdly smooth (I prefer the Penmanship).

-78g squeeze converter, con20/50/70 don't fit.

-it can't pierce new pilot cartridges

Provided that its specific included converter, if broken, is not sold separately..I'm really worried.

last chance: do prepunctured/refilled pilot cartridges fit properly?
