Beautiful work, as always, TM. Still, I think the spine accent takes away too much of the paper. I guess I am condemned to the ledgers. They are not as visually arresting in terms of surprising contrasts. However they leave me with more of the beautiful design of the cover.

But I actually sometimes DO give away journals (apart from my usual friends and relatives etc ) from time to time .

I did that this year to FPN folks as a gesture of appreciation for their 'virtual' but warm friendship all these years.

I would love to buy one but I would be so afraid to even use it or get it dirty.. My life is really rough with slip seating in tri-axle trucks and all my stuff is store in a backpack that I take everyday for driving and learning electronics on my down time..Oh I haul sand-stone-dirt-dga-junk-ashault with diesel to wash body..

But you have top notch quality work and love seeing all your beautiful work ..

This is a pair of journals to be gifted away to a friend ...

 

Started with the idea of what would make a journal that would be that little bit meaningful and perhaps more personalized ...

 

Settled on the concept theme of 'family' ...

and

I remembered the art skills of a childhood friend , who recently set up her website offering her artworks for sale ...

(she also did the Nautilus cutout for me ... )

So i asked her to do an artwork for me depicting the recipient's family mama & papa and 4 kids, using her adorable polar bear theme ...

 

and so we have ... papa & mama bear and 4 cubs ...

(altho technically, polar bears usually only have one or two cubs )

( I did a little adjustment to accomodate the split caused by the spine )

The artwork comes into full view ...

The artwork had to be reduced in scale and positioned exactly so that the stitches won't interrupt the picture.

The zig-zag sewing stations helped in this matter.

At some suggestions , tried out narrowing the spine accent ...

 

Did some modification to the pattern , reduced the width ...

You can see the maple leaves under the black spine accent.

This is the result of the elaborate cutouts done at stage one.

In this pic , you can also understand why the choice of the card underlay (for the emboss/deboss) is important.

You need to pick a suitable thickness.

somewhere around postcard thickness , slightly thicker than that.

I have these beautiful postcards from my trip to Japan some time ago ...

 

Postcards depicting the works of artists ...

Like Kiyoshi Saito on the leftside

and

Escher on the right

But uniquely, these are all exactly A6 size and not your usual postcard size (which is just a little narrower)

Here , the greyboard cover in A6 size sits exactly atop the Escher one ...

The thing I am trying to resolve now is how to have these cards covering the journal covers ?

Without the stitches interrupting the artwork ...

Hmmm ....

 

 

 

Just for a little fun ,

if i were to use both of these two seemingly related paintings ,

which would you put on the rear cover and which on the front , and why?

I think I'd put the two conversing cats on the front. They're still "discussing" what's (to come) in the notebook. On the back cover they're only looking back on it...

If you made the notebook (+ cover) slightly larger than the postcard you could fit it and the stitches would not interrupt the artwork. So maybe an A5 notebook and the cards in the middle. Bookcloth surrounding it and carrying the stitches. Like a frame...

Its the natural first solution to opt for.

This is another journal made to order ...

 

I bought these high quality wrapping papers by PEPIN Press from Amsterdam some time ago.

They come in various volumes featuring themed patterns and motifs.

 

This one carries 12 selected Persian motifs .

Very nice patterns.

You can also find similar products in scrapbooking stores.

Large sheets of patterned wrapping paper attached in book form.

You tear out each sheet.

 

so this one is torn out (perforated edge) from the book

Its not that large.

I realized too late that the patterns were more intricate than I thought.

I wasnt paying attention and I cut them up before realizing so.

A bit too hasty from over confidence ...

 

 

Found the 'right' motif to accentuate and mounted onto the prepared covers...

Took me a long while to position each cover material accurately, becos the patterns were highly symmetrical and anything that is too much out of alignment will become obvious.

I decided on a contrasting colour accent and went for the Indian Red bookcloth...

The paper is not thickish, so I expect the pointed triangular tips to be a lot less pronounced, may be even not noticeable.

And true enough, here , you can hardly detect it.

The green theme is prominent , and so I decided on green flyleaves.

Amazing work. I love the Postage journal. The dark brown bookcloth and the mango accents really make it pop. That will be a treasured book, for sure. The Persian journal is great, too. What is the design name of the pattern, if it has any?
