O dear ...

Wonder why olive drab irks you so much 🤔 😁

No clue.  I mostly don't like brown-leaning reds or reddish browns, either.

For greens I generally prefer darker ones, but not blue leaning ones, or ones that lean just SLIGHTLY yellow.  For browns, I mostly prefer sepia tones over red-browns.

Of course now I'm thinking back to when I was an art student, and "the ugly color problem" in my Color and Design 1 class as a freshman.  We had to go through the box of Color-aid paper and pick ones we didn't like and do a design with those colors, and I picked a lot of burgundies and dark greens, and when I got done with the design?  They actually looked good together (which I suspect was the whole point of the assignment...).

I named this Persimmon for the shade of red .

Its made to be gifted away to someone in mind.

I learned that Persimmons are also the national fruit of Japan.

and in the autumn or winter seasons when the tree is bare of leaves, the fruit appears, oftentimes many , sometimes ready for harvesting?  and its quite a stunning sight which I saw with my own eyes in JPN in Dec. I saw them in some backyards of homes.

Nice bright red round fruits hanging from brown stick branches . and in the cold weather when everything looks cold , grey.

So its like a reminder that in the cold of winter , Mother Nature reminds us that she's in full control, not everything is 'forlorn' .

Change will come, as surely as the cycle of seasons and this is symbolized by the tombows.

So I chose brown to symbolize the branches.

(the cords are not dark brown enough like the flyleaves)

Still experimenting with the persimmon tombows ....

I retrieved one of my old bookcloths - SAIFU bookcloth - Coral Pink

Its got that shade that worked ...

Its not a bright pink.

its chroma is toned down.

Hence if you look  at it, you can see that this spine accent kind of recedes , allowing the washi to stand out.

DSCF0545.JPG.8da9beab11fc9034898991f4b69f5779.JPG

The spine accent upclose.

It tends to get 'linty'

Its just the fabric.

Hmmm... made to be gifted... I could think of at least one of my people here that might love it. On the other hand, it would really stand out in my collection - such a bright color... not my usual kettle of fish, but it speaks to me, and I love the idea.

So there's number 4... unless you do another one that I like even more... I've promised myself four.

Found some downtime to try what I knew would be visually stunning ....

This one ...

LACQUERED YUSEN - HYDRANGEAS - DEEP RED

The image is embossed.

on a black background.

DSCF0548.JPG.ffd2ed8dbf400d0b4d5ed48f50a7429e.JPG

Its so hard to get the colours right onscreen

Here pictured with kids coloured pencils to give you a better  idea.

Assisted by my paperweights or penrests ...

I decided to use the Bokhara Red bookcloth from that London bookbindery some years back.

Its a very nice dark maroon?

The chroma is toned down. Its not loud.

DSCF0549.JPG.b9366da87c869599b486cf17eb6894a1.JPG

The YUSEN washi has that shade of red that I think is pretty much that seen in  japanese red / black lacquerware.

DSCF0550.JPG.dd6ce67cd3085aad8363de04c8cad219.JPG

Apparently Hydrangeas have some significance in Japanese folklore.

DSCF0551.JPG.3fb6f4ac5a0e52cc93641efba986cc93.JPG

I cut down the saturation by 10 points in all if not most of the pics.

A6 size (small)

DSCF0553.JPG.b07200f77b69a4aaa4756dad4843e343.JPG

I think this is more accurate - the colour.

The green cutting mat is accurate.

DSCF0554.JPG.9b3a0db24a6eeff3484ffb7763632600.JPG

DSCF0558.JPG.56e06cb1285065aaaf270a97323b54c7.JPG

DSCF0559.JPG.1297a63a92554d7acf1dec77f9281cb1.JPG

Here you can see the quality of the bookcloth.

The fabric is denser.

The threadcount? is finer.

It feels nice to the touch too like when you feel fabric of heavy threadcount.

DSCF0560.JPG.7a964e22445c815091d20a43b4d1ee9e.JPG

I think its stunning ....

Maybe the colours are more accurate over at INSTAGRAM  ...

(this is so frustrating)

what colour threads should I now use in this combo ?

What do you think ?

Black threads would be a natural choice.

Signal Yellow ?

Baby Blue ? (Hydrangea Lilac ?)

From internet ...

I envy them.

As you would know by now, I often craft journals with someone in mind. Its highly personalised. I guess it helps me come up with a better end product.

This explains why there's quite a bit of time spent on thinking about what would the recipient like or dislike or really cherish , as many of you here have come to experience with me.

It certainly carries alot of special meaning , memories , when finally in the hands of the recipient.

I think i will try a reverse scheme of this recently completed one ...

ie, covered in Bokhara Red bookcloth , but the spine accents are in the Hydrangeas ...

My guess is that the spine area might be too small to give a more 'complete' picture of the Hydrangeas .

In that case, to then make them an obvious pair would be a more sensible solution, ie each would help explain the other.

A B6 size (medium) might help .

An A5 size (large) might also help alot.

Becos these are sizes large enough where the Hydrangeas can be displayed more in its entirety for the eyes to appreciate and make sense of what it is seeing.

image.jpeg.2b01493aab05f07b970b4cf0884a6bbc.jpeg

Another variant would be a glossy black cover material , ie something like m*leskine cover material, as a possible variant.

Either maiinly covered in glossy black , then with a Hydrangea spine accent ,

or

covered mainly in this Hydrangea washi , but the spine accent is in glossy black.

The glossy black in the interstices of the Hydrangeas would flow and meld into the spine accent.

..... I think ....

I think I like this last idea the best. And if you do a pair, then the previous idea obviously, so black main cover, and spine accent in the flowers. I think B6 would be a good size, although to be honest, to form a set with the earlier two (or three) A6 would also work for me. Wow this is beautiful. But if you do these, I'm stopping there. I already have more notebooks than I can ever use up, but these I would probably start using as soon as I receive them...

We are the exact opposite in color preferences, I love burgundies and dark greens that lean blue.

We do share the same un-like of olive green, I will add any drab color.

Was Color-aid paper, construction paper or Pantone or other brand paper?

So fascinating! I would have loved to take an elective class called Color and Design, as a first year college students but, Art and Architectural Colleges were only present in select cities, I suspect, mostly Paris.

Ruth, do you think we would both be able to make an olive green + another color design? Or, nah?

This notebook is stunning!

I am not a notebook person, nor a black and red person, I agree a black spine accent would also be gorgeous.

Every single one of our notebooks is a work of art, I probably said that on one of your first posts, not only does it still hold true, but, your mastery of the bookbinder craft, is shown in an ever greater manner, with each new notebook series.

Maybe if it's not the main color -- just an accent color.

Interesting.

I like the "m*skin" spine accent and the washi flowers the best.

The hybrid ones with one main washi and one main paper, not so much, although it could get to work on me...

Better as a converse pair, like the first idea.

agree, the symmetrical pairings, look better, less odd.

i also guessed as much you'd like this black version better.

and now that we have tried the black spine accent, i am thinking it might work too with this olive drab washi , the tombows are black.
