Amazing work. I love the Postage journal. The dark brown bookcloth and the mango accents really make it pop. That will be a treasured book, for sure. The Persian journal is great, too. What is the design name of the pattern, if it has any?

Have you decided to keep using the slightly thinner spine decoration?

Yeah , the Postage journal looks good. The colours all seem to work very well together.

I can't find any name for that pattern nor the other eleven.

I will keep both sizes of the spine pattern.

There are situations where the wider one is more suitable - like when the cover material's design doesn't need more 'display space' .

That's when the spine accent and bookcloth helps to make the journal less ordinary looking.

The Persian #12 journal is one example where its pattern is intricate that it deserves more 'display area'.

This one's 115E "Postage" in A6 size.

A variant of a popular theme made to order.

The problem I had was that I was working with leftover materials.

(I have a habit of keeping scraps and leftovers. I am the sort who believes that they will come useful one day)

And this was the leftover - two separate cut sheets.

and I had to fashion covers out of these.

In the end, the specific parts were selected.

Here you see a plastic template to help me visualize what to keep and what to discard for the covers.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/horjh35w.png

My 78th TR journal.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6235.jpg

One of the challenges in using this nice paper is to allow more of the graphics to be on display.

So , we decided to do away with the spine bookcloth accent.

Front

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6218.jpg

The corner accents are a deep umber shade.

As usual, the bookcloth accents are done in such away that they are flushed on the same level

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6222.jpg

One of the trademarks in my journals is how I deal with corner turnovers.

when a corner is turned in, you have this (unsightly) bump ...

(you will see this commonly in leather or leather-lookalike covered Bibles. If you are the handicraft kind of person, you can try this on your Bibles. It actually works.)

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/m6l52l0e.png

So what I do is to wet it carefully with water that's been used to rinse your glue brushes, and then clamping them overnight or under high pressure for a few hours...

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/77pnz1qf.png

The end result is always worth the time taken for this technique

Here is the end result...

super flat turn-ins .

No bumps whatsoever

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/iucn2ip1.png

This extra step pays in the end at this completed stage ...

where you no longer have any chance of rectifying , even if you want to ...

Here you can see and feel the flatness of them corners.

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6237.jpg

Having matching elastic bands makes the whole end product look a lot better

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6240.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6241.jpg

I took a decision to want to keep the emboss/deboss along the spine to allow the threads to be better protected from abrasions from daily use.

so here, if you look carefully, you see the same pattern of emboss/deboss

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6224.jpg

The stitches are well seated in the deboss parts

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6228.jpg

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/TMLee/2010%20JOURNALS/Journal%20115%20Postage/115E%20POSTAGE/DSCF6229.jpg

The whole journal carried hues that were drab , brown, dark.

Thankfully, the Owner agreed to let the stitches be of a bright colour to add that punch and aesthetic interest.

A bright chilli red (not a dark and drab one) was chosen.

Matching red ribbon pagemarker too. :)

This set was made to order.

I took a very very long time to fulfill this order.

Those who know me a little better and the way I work, will probably understand why.

I take a longer time if I am faced with a new challenge - for example when its a request requiring a design solution which in turns require an untried technique.

The request came in for a pair of journals.

In the colours of a beautiful kingfisher bird.

Colours like teal and shades of brown.

Nature has the best source and illustration of colour combinations.

As usual, many rounds of discussions.

We settled on this fabric eventually ...

100% cotton.

A kind of pointillist pattern.

The fabric is interesting , on one end its red and it gradually changes to blue at the other end.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/DSCF5755_zpsdwalesnh.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/DSCF5757_zpsao7qyqmc.jpg

The idea was to pick both a blue and a brown portion and in that portion , also a gradient of colours that would be symmetrical on both covers.

So that meant using the fabric in this manner

For the brown ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/DSCF5760_zpsy7x4ojby.jpg

and for the blue ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/trac_zpsupwqshbj.jpg

Again, consideration was given to preserving the beauty of the fabric, so the idea of spine accents was dropped.

still , it would be interesting to add something at the spine.

And we settled on a deboss which doubled up as a form of protection for the threads.

The threads by being seated on the deboss areas, are protected from abrasions from normal use.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/blu_11_zpsfbsatur2.jpg

So here , the exact same regions of the fabric was selected to achieve symmetry on the covers front and rear...

Brown

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/w8cxn743_zpsmk9ma0ww.png

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/rnhqke5x_zpstsczpf7s.png

and blue ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/blu_12_zps1sikwnqv.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/blu_13_zpswr6wwzoa.jpg

Its hard to see the deboss , but you can make it out if you look carefully ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/DSCF6289_zpsptb3gdl6.jpg

When you pick it up, you can feel the deboss.

These recesses under your touch also gives you a haptic feedback. :D

Next came the decision on what to use for the corner accents.

I usually take this decision with the flyleaves in mind.

and this is where I got stuck for months .

I wasn't clear and decided about what to use for the flyleaves.

Whatever the corner accents, it mustn't overwhelm the fabric covers.

It was only after solving the flyleaves , that the corner accents were then installed.

Because the fabric covers were 'plain' , we started to think about choosing flyleaves that offered interest , rather than also plain which is what I usually do for my journals.

scrap-booking paper which I use occasionally in my journals , came to mind.

some contenders

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/5%203_zpsnbuwjjsr.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/5%206_zps0gnpsjht.jpg

After a few rounds of looking at various kinds of scrapbooking paper, we settled on these ...

nature themed ...

Considerations were also given to :

the thread colour,

the bookcloth accents

and the one thing that troubled me the most - the pocket ! :headsmack:

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/5%202_zpsr61xdedk.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/5%201_zpswws5dgnr.jpg

I have a habit of saving scraps ...

here I used leftover fabric to turn into a bookmark ...

each fabric was glued onto one piece of paper - frontside and backside ...

my assistant helping me to illustrate ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/246A%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BLUE/blu_15_zpstuvwvjd7.jpg

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2017/246%20POINTILLIST%20-%20BROWN/r7538jv3_zpsjgb8uqs7.png

About an inch wide...

Quite comfortable to use.

Feels like leather

Back to the flyleaves

Next comes the selection and decision as to which part of the scrapbooking paper to use for the flyleaves.

Scrapbooking paper is 12" x 12" square.

The flyleaves are smaller in dimension - exactly A4 size.

But I need two sheets of scrapbook paper to make two flyleaves.

Here you see some study as to which part to use and which to discard...

The flyleaves cut to exact A4 size

They look very good and showed promise

The pocket - I couldn't solve for months.

I didnt want to use another two sheets of scrapbooking paper to make the pocket and the anti drop-out flap.

I just felt it was overkill and just not cost effective (wasteful?) to use 4 sheets for one journal.

I decided on using tracing vellum - that was a little less drab.

This one is marbled white tracing paper ...

The covers completed ...

The two flyleaves though similar themed, had slight differences.

I was relieved that the hue in the both , can blend and co-ordinate with the corner accents and the threads ...

Mostly some practice. Having beautiful materials helps a lot. TMLee's threads goes back ~10 years. Search back and see his original single digit journals.

I bind my own journal refills. Rounding the corners of 64 pages x 4 corners takes more time than stitching it up.

I stumbled on this post while putting off making a journal for some friends. I am glad I took the time to look through. I am very new, binding my 5th (maybe 6th) journal using Coptic stitch and am inspired by a lot of the things you do to add interest and functionality to your journals. Very cool to see. Thanks for sharing.

I have been scrolling through this thread with my jaw hanging open. These are absolutely stunning pieces. My only criticism, as others have mentioned, is that I can't thing of anything worthy of being written in such a gorgeous book -- I'd have to pass them to poet friends! Please do keep posting, this thread is incredibly enjoyable.
