A Review Of Namiki Emperor In Vermillion Urushi

If you like writing with emperor-sized pen like Vermillion or Black Urushi, is the Maki-e Emperor size is the likely next step?

Yes, if your finances allow it. Photographs do not do justice to the three-dimensionality of the Maki-e on these pens. My personal favorite is the Goldfish, which I have seen at a couple of shows.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Wonderful review!

Don`t know how it happened, but this pen became my one real (modern) grail pen & every once in a while I fantasise about getting one!

Unfortunately it`s far above my pay grade :( but if I sell enough of my pens it could be done. Maybe. But still, 2000 $? For a pen?

Of the three models I prefer the one with the two rings. Why? Because to me it`s the Ultimative Classic Japanese Pen. Period.

After all, it is a replica of a 30ies pen.

Looking at size comparisons, I have difficulties imagining that this monster-pen would fit my hand ?!

My biggest pen is a Delta Dolcevita Midsize & I find Sailor ProGears quite comfortable to use.

I`d be afraid of spending a fortune on a pen I won`t use much.

The much smaller, but still big Royale looks to be a more reasonable pen for me, but as it`s made from brass I fear that it`d be too heavy

The most "inexpensive" alternative would be a red Nakaya. In the past I`ve really liked the esthetics of Nakaya but nowadays I`m not so enamoured any longer: I don`t like the clip (compared to Namiki`s ball clip) & they look too modern to me.

So if I wanted a red japanese Urushi lacquered classic looking pen, a Nakaya is out, the Royale is probably too heavy and the Emperor very probably too big, which leaves ... nothing, right. Add to that, the price tag & the fact that I`ve never seen the two-ringed version on the western market.

One can still dream :D

PS: Are there any Japanese Pen sites who sell Namiki Royale/Emperors? Engeika don`t seem to have them any longer.

Have you considered Danitrio?

The Danitrio Takumi Roiro Shu might be a possibility as it's a sizeable pen made from ebonite with urushi, but without the rings.

Expensive of course!

Pens: Conid Kingsize ebonite (x2)
Inks:
KWZ Dark Brown / KWZ IG Orange / Diamine Chocolate / Diamine Burnt Sienna / Diamine Ochre / Monteverde Scotch Brown

I like it even less than the Nakaya.

I really prefer vintage over new pens reg. design. That is why the Namiki appeals to me, even more so with the two rings :)

It does for the 1930ies what the Eboya does for the 1910/20ies.

In fact, had i to name the most quintessential looking fountain pen ever, it would be the Namiki Emperor.

A custom made pen might be another option. In any case, good luck on finding your grail pen! :ninja: :)

Please try it out. The big pen is quite comfortable for writing once you get adjusted to it. It provides a different writing experience than the usual sized pens.

Thanks Polanova :)

I know the reply is much delayed, as I have been off pens/fpn etc for quite a while :D

I found Royale more convenient for everyday use (of course you don't get the same #50 jumbo nib). Weighs around 27 g (cap is another 17-18g) uncapped/with converter (Others: emperor-30g uncapped/uninked, Sailor PG-25g capped/with converter/inked) and is pleasant to use. Perhaps the shade of royale which I got, appears more cheerful :)

Sonik, Sudhir, Maverink it has been a few years since you guys got your no 50s. Do you have a long term update. Is the pen still getting the love? My pen has remained constantly inked from 2015 through today.

I can't say anything about them but I posted in this thread earlier.

I acquired my pen at the end of 2015, and it is almost always inked. Has gone through 70ml+ of ink with an FM nib.

It's the best pen that I own, and I did get 2 more to show my appreciation for the pen. :)

Well, I won't pretend I've used the pen extensively. Too many pens and inks that get in the way of enjoying just this one pen. Sometimes life gets in the way too.

But when I use this pen, it is always a magical experience.

my only regret is that I don't dare pocket carry this pen like I do with every other pen that I own. This will be rectified if i buy one more as a spare. :)

I've had mine for ~18 months now, and it really doesn't get much love. The #20 Yukari Royale, however, gets daily use and has become my go-to pen...

YMMV, but for me I find the Emperor a pen without a purpose...

Too many pens; too little writing.

I love the pen so much I have 2 of them, with the second one a recent purchase in FM. The store said it's a rather unusual sizing for the nib because most people get this pen in B as its considered a signature pen and not for regular writing. I am currently carry the FM everyday in a hard 6 pen case by Wolf as it's one of the very few pen cases I have that can fit the pen. It's a lovely pen to use and it's a little sad to see many use it primarily as a desk pen.

For me, the pen attracts too much attention at work :), because of the sheer size and radiance. However, I do carry it with me at times, and love the pen nonetheless. I do use the pen for home writing to be specific

So I do use the pen at home. YR is kind of a smaller version and you can use it a normal pen without being worried about hurting the nib or something in a hurry. Thanks for sharing your experience and the 6 pen case :)

I had somehow missed this post :) Thanks for asking this question and most importantly sharing an reminder, Hari. It's time to re-ink the pen. Mine did not get used much during last year, since for day to day notes at office I would usually go for a Japanese fine point (given the paper quality of pads and diaries).

damn I was planning on keeping my $1500 pen in the fridge at all times.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)
