Wow! #8 nib! How big is that?! I love old Swans! Is the nib flexible?

Received this beautiful Falcon today. The nib is much harder than I imagined it to be though and requires a lot of force to produce any line variation, and much harder than the Pilot Custom 74. When writing casually with it it feels like a nail just like my Platinum 3776.

I really hope it will become softer otherwise I've wasted a lot of money.

Perhaps I had unrealistic expectations

I had the same feeling when I received my Falcon. It is as if the pen is "wild", headstrong and springy, not cooperative like old Swans and Waterman's. Anyway, I kept hoping that the pen would calm down... but it didn't. I had to accept that it is different, and I had to learn to appreciate the otherness. After all, it is a beautiful pen and it has qualities no other pen in my "collection" has. Maybe your expectations just need to be tuned. I hope I didn't crush your dreams by saying that I don't think it will become softer. Play with it and you will probably find out it is a fun pen :-) ... Or you could have a nibmeister grind it softer.

Heh no you didn't crush them, it's just my wallet that felt a little crushed. I was hoping that each pen purchase will add value and provide a unique experience in some way, so I was initially disappointed because the writing experience is not much different to the hard nail-like Platinum. I'm toying with the idea of askng a nibmeister to work on it.

You're right, it's a beautiful pen with a unique nib and I'm getting to like the pen more. One extra thing that it gives of value is that as well as the the flow being excellent I can leave it uncapped for 5 minutes or more and it will still write, so it's a good substitute for my Pilot Capless when I'm note taking.

It is freaking huge. I gambled on this one as it did look like the nib might be flexible, but alas, it is not. Here's a shot of it next to a Montblanc 149:

I spent the weekend putting the Swan back together.....

Fascinating pen. The only other old pen with a snake on it I've ever heard of is the famous Parker. Know anything of the history of this model? Gorgeous.

One can only hope I guess. I'm not totally optimistic about it breaking in and it doesn't appear to have shown any signs so far, could it be that I get used to it instead.

The history goes like this:

I bought the pen with a broken clip and no sac for a song. Then I spent the weekend making my own Swan Rouge et Noir using the snake clip from my Edison Collier and Testors enamel model paint.
