I can't decide! Picked up a bag o' (steel dip) pens without knowing just what was in it. I finished sorting them but haven't finished counting (estimate 700-800 total)

Hiding away oh, so shyly in the bag of brash Esterbrooks, Hunts and Leon Isaacs were these little beauties.

Now I haven't the slightest idea where to start. I guess I'll finish the inventory first.

Got hold of some walnut ink yesterday. Testing it out today in my poor abused parallel pen. It flows, but not a massive amount of ink laid down. Much more satisfying result from dip nibs (as expected).

Sorry, I'm short of words to express my admiration of your elegant, informal writing.

Finally, my two pennies worth:

Hi Rednaxela,

my son wanted to post a reply to your kids using his FP (his first one, but I´m sure it will be not his last one). :)

Great shot Eli, your photos are awesome.

Liz be careful using non FP ink in a FP, you might will have only one time fun with it.

Well done EoC.

Andrew, that's a huge amount of nibs, I guess this will last for several years of heavy usage.

Cool pens inky.

Pterodactlyus - thanks for the concern. Don't worry, that pen is almost indestructible. (And i'll flush it out tonight)

I was really inspired by the reed pens Rednaxela created and his kids used.

I wanted to try it also out with my son.

So yesterday we had a walk in the forest, and as neither reed nor bamboo grows here I thougt maybe black elder would be an alternative.

You can create awesome (durable) whistles from black elder.

It can easily hollowed so I thought this is worth a try.

Together we both started to create the pens, hollowed the sticks, carved the shape.

It was really fun and great teamwork.

My son (6Y) decorticated (I let him already use a pocket knive and he is very proud that he is allowed to use it already (under supervision)) and hollowed the sticks.

During the creation of the 5th pen we had a little incident, he slightly cut his finger, nothing severe but the fun was over at this point for him (luckily we were almost done).

But this is also a valuable learning experience, always take care when handling a knive.

(Black Elder pens)

After lunch we tried the pens out and they worked surprisingly well, really good oblique crisp italic pens.

And there was another surprise, we bought yesterday at a local office supply store a bottle ink "Libro Königsblau" (as I didn´t wanted to use one of mine and may conterminate it).

It was less than 2€ and I had no big expectations, but this ink really surprises me, it´s a very rich great blue, it even has some sheen.

Definitely worth the money, I will test it also in a conventional pen later.

After the first scribbling we started with real test pictures.

My sons test picture was a monster head (I think it´s a cyborg monster, the eyes are left and right at the lower edges)

My test picture was a dragon:

So creating and using such pens was really fun and a great family event, I can only recommend to try it also with your kids.

Ptero, very cool. I bet you've had a fantastic day together!

So far I've only cut mine straight, not oblique, though I might try this in the future. Either way your drawings have come out great. Very nice to see that the pens work so well with this material too.

Also, thank you on behalf of S&F for the lovely bird and the greeting. S&F were absolutely delighted!

I have that pen, but not beautifully customized like yours. How does one get aa fun snake-clip and full-flex nib on a modern pen like that? Can you give away trade secrets? ;)

Thank you for many hours of interesting and mouthwatering reading!

I would like to contribute with something as fun and entertaining as your posts ... unfortunately, I cannot take good pictures, color correct, fix the white balance (would like to blame it on the iPad camera ... But the excuse is a bit lame ;)), draw (be it birds, robots, tractors or anything else) or write elegantly/consistently (ok, sometimes my handwriting is slightly less childlish... when I'm not concentrating too hard, and just "let it flow" - unlike now:))

Nonetheless, I'm having a lot of fun!!

So, here goes ... Hope I got the "upload foto" right (Hacked Conid Bulkfiller with a vintage Waterman nib - ink J. Herbin, "Cacao du Brésil"

Breaking Bad offers a good methodology for acquiring such pens. :P
