Lovely! :)

Out of interest, is there really no closer equivalent in English?

Edit: sorry, misread the last line. It says 'Romanic languages'.

After having to face the circus that is our current political campaign in the US, I happened upon an amusing commentary in Dutch on the Germanic sayings concerning the Devil and where he... um... helps out. The Dutch and German speakers will be amused... ;)

The phrase? We say "The devil takes care of his own" —with no reference to where the devil may or may not defecate. ;)

Or did you mean the language in general? On that topic, linguists name Frisian as the closest (still extant) language related to English, with Dutch as second.

Thank you. Exactly what I was wondering. :)

Really? Wow. Out of interest, what is your experience re. this? I take it there are moments you wished they had not grown apart so much?

In a way. I have seen how Spaniards and Italians can communicate on a basic level —each speaking her/his own language—, but there is no close sister language to English, which makes it a very lonely language indeed.

But there are times when I see a sentence in Dutch, and then realize that our language is not so alone: e.g., "Dat is goed, dacht de man"...

And with all the birds, I can't help but think of Stevens' brilliant "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird". Here is one section, written with an Edison Collier "Silver Marble" with Private Reserve Naples Blue ink:

Some birds drawn with calami.

24974551929_6dae84c608_c.jpg

By Sophia, 8yo and Felix, 6yo.

I have cut these reed pens myself when I was trying my hand at some formal italic. Found out that they are actually very nice tools for children to enjoy their first steps into the world of calligraphy. Sure calami can break but it is relatively cheap, easy and a lot of fun to cut a new one. Which I realise I have not had to do yet. The pens are being handled with utmost care. :)

For anyone wondering about the annotations: vogel = bird, doode (dode) = dead, and kuikens = chicks.

He's a showman. Sings nicely, but the lead singer is another green pen, the Vigilant, with its 0.5 stub (by Greg Minuskin).

Coincidentally Greg's working on my two pens...and you inspired my purchase of 4 Shaeffers, now in the mail. Thanks Eli.

It was you! Your samples made me order a 2.4mm Parallel pen. Next week I'll try to tame it.

Great shots!

I hope you'll like it as much as I do! ;)
