Mont Blanc - Is It Fake Or Genuine?

rob3902

Recommended Posts

I bought my first Mont Blanc on eBay. The pen (MB145) was supposed to be shipped from London, UK ( seller's location indicated in the listing), but it was actually shipped from China.
The box was in poor condition.

Is the pen fake? What is your opinion?

Nib imprint is too shallow, fake and wrong converter, garbage box, gold color looks like it goes all thw way to the end of the nib over the tipping, etc.

Did you Google the serial number? A lot of fakes use the same one.

And really, why would the pen come from China in your example except if it was made there.

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!

Sorry to report: if you Google EN1340798, you'll find a good few pens carrying the same number.

Never a good sign.

It baffles me that counterfeiters got to such lengths to make their pens exact copies, then use the same serial number again and again.

It is a fake and the main reason apart from the fake serial number is that you can see lots of gold paint flaking off of the nib, as well as covering the tips where the 'iridium' should be. So that tells you straight away that it isn't a gold nib. That can't possibly happen on a gold nib.

The feed isn't correct. If you were to drag your fingernail along those fins they are so soft they will bend from the direction that you dragged your nail.

The converter is nothing like an authentic screw in converter, so that's a fake and I bet an authentic one wouldn't fit in. No Montblanc converter has ever had the words Mont and Blanc printed along it, nor that weird wrong snowcap logo next to the word Blanc. The brand name is Montblanc no space.

The box isn't authentic, because the Montblanc logo inside isn't correct, and nor is the warranty certificate. I bet the part of the box where the pen sits has a cut out portion rather than having two folded edges that are very tightly close together so that you have to really push hard to get the pen in between the two folded parts.

Hi there,

as I'm total newbie to both this forum and let"s say fountain pens as well, I would need your help regarding opinion about genuinity of Meisterstueck 149 that I just bought yesterday. Pics are below:

  • 2 weeks later...

Rob,

As stated by others, the 145 is, without a doubt, a fake. Assuming you just received the pen, file a claim with Ebay immediately based on the item being counterfeit. Also include a note that the seller is giving a false location. You'll get your money back but it will take a few weeks.

Look to see if the seller has more of the same pen for sale (they likely do or will very soon) and report each of them if he/she does.

I've mentioned this in other posts. They are making piston fillers in India for $17.00USD, so the piston filler verification is no longer valid. And again, the top the clip of a real 149 is not flat with a hard angle down. The "bump" rolls all the way to the body of the cap. I had to send a fake back on eBay and noticed this.

They aren't making piston fillers that are like Montblanc authentic piston fillers, so the working Montblanc type piston filler and window is still a valid method of denoting an authentic Montblanc.

No 149 that has a piston filler and an ink window like the one pictured is a fake.

Can you show us a picture of the $17 Indian piston filler?

http://file///C:/Users/Ray/Desktop/Pics/dsc00229.jpgBy no means am I trying to offend, only stating my observances. I just sent back a 149 that had a piston filler (it would only write for 3/4 of a page before I had to twist the piston to get some more ink to the nib. Then do it again after another 1/2 page). This was on top of a nib (by no means am I an expert), feeling and looking like a chicken foot. I compared it to the 146 that I purchased and noticed some differences, subtle and not. The 149 weighed less than the 146. Aside from the 146 writing like butter on a heated mirror, when you look at the clip at the top, the bump rolls all the way to the body of the cap, see pic below (above?). The fake had a hard 90 degree angle and flat top, the real has a softer angle aside from the bump.

this website has indian piston fillers now for $4 on their opening page:

www.fountainpenrevolution.com

Obviously, they are not the MB fakes, I'm just saying that they've duplicated the technology that makes it cost prohibitive to make a piston filled fountain pen.

I'm using an old ultralite and not sure if the pic uploaded or not. Will try again if it doesn't go.

post-127839-0-13122000-1454075941_thumb.jpgIt took me reading directions to figure this out (I apologize). Here are two 149's, one with a "flat top" clip, and one with a non-90 degree (bump flows to the cap body). I submit that the "flat top" cap is a copy. Could I be wrong? Certainly, but I think manufacturing has come quite a ways and even if they cost 25-50-75 dollars to make, the current rate is almost all over $400 as of this morning. This is the fake version, note the flat area on top of the clip.

This, I submit, is the real version. Unless someone can explain why the variation exists from an exclusive manufacturer. As I said, the one I sent back wrote worse than the Jinhao pens that I have, and I apologize again for not taking photos. I think I can find a writing sample between the 146 and the two 149's. The nib alone tells the story.

Thanks,

This is just my observation and mho and not intended to frustrate, aggravate, or otherwise upset anyone. I just think that the levels of fakes has risen and a lot of the assumptions held previously are no longer valid.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
