Platinum 3776 Maki-E Style Gold-Leaf Fps - Info Help

Given that Pilot Capless Fermo is my EDC, I was thinking of expanding my collection to other Japanese FPs. I am fascinated by the Maki-e process, but practically ALL of them are out of reach, budget wise. There is of course the Maki-e Style Fps from Platinum which I have read about in these very forums. What I have am finding difficult to find is any mention of the 3776 Gold leaf series Maki-e style FPs (Yes I did the search, or may be not with the right words).

Would anyone who is familiar with and or own both of them (gold leaf and the regular Maki-e style FPs that is : http://platinumpenusa.com/luxury-writing/3776-collection/ ) be kind enough to educate on the difference between them, quality wise (Maki-e, balance, weight etc). Of particular interest would be the nib perforamce (The nibs look different, the gold leaf one looks more like the regular 3776) - springy / nail comparison between the two. Smoothness is what I don't mind as I have learned to make my nibs as smooth as I want.

The 3776 "The ascending dragon" seems to be winking at me, it does look like a lot of effort has gone into making that (may be not as much as a real Maki-e, but good enough for budget restricted people like me)

Thanks in advance

I cant comment much since this will be aesthetics but if were going to look at the "standard" version and the 3776 version

I would opt for the 3776 Century version not because of the cigar shape but perhaps because of the sealing cap it has

as for performance the "standard" version will be sprigier this is after all the nib design's strength for the wing fold nib, as opposed to the 3776 century nib

but in the end it will be your choice

I have some of the Platinum #3776 Century Maki-e style pens and find them reliable and forgiving but the nibs are stiff. I would expect the "Syou-Ryu" to be the same.

The gold leaf aka the Kanazawa-Haku technique is lovely. Here's some info from a Japanese website on that technique: http://www.kanazawa-tourism.com/eng/info/info3.php

I've a gold leaf pen in the "standard" size (not a #3776). It's a sweet, great EDC.

All in all the nibs will be the same among those in the #3776 series. Very different feel from a Pilot Fermo nib. More like writing across a smooth stone; not scratchy but has personality. Great nibs, IMHO.

Thank you all for the valuable information

Jar : that pen just convinced me :) , thanks for the fanstastic picture. Any leads on which online store to buy ? (I am in EU, so there are not many BnM Shops in my area)

jde : I had seen the video and read the text via a link in platinum usa website, thank you nonetheless.

Algester : noted. if I do opt for the 3776, it'll be with a slip and seal cap. I watched the entire video of how they sorted the problem of the threaded cap vs the pull-off cap as well. Very interesting.

After reading a bit more of Maki-e on the web, my ignorance became obvious. The quest for a Maki-e FP stops here, while the learning mode is switched on, respect the process, learn it and then earn it is my current motto. I thank all of you for the help rendered. My cup is now empty (zen).

A gratuitous picture of my one and only 3776.

Worth a look at Cult Pens in the UK They have a gold leaf ascending dragon pen which I am quite tempted by.

That is indeed a beautiful pen ! would you mind letting me the exact model of the pen in the picture? . The Ascending dragon is indeed very tempting, but for now, I am still learning about the art of Maki-e and Urushi. Thanks again

I am embarrassed to admit I know little about it. This pen was an impulse buy from Sarj at a pen show one year. As you say it is a good looking pen and I couldn't resist!
