So, #InkyFingers, what is your assessment of/reaction to Reynolds' everyday, informal italic script?

I agree. The handwriting reveals the rich complexity of the man.

I do find it very appealing as to the ability to give writing a bit of character and the flourish more pronounced.

In Bernardino Cataneo, his letter forms seems to be of this nature. I am able to reproduce his samples more readily than a non flex steel nib.

I am curious as how a quill with such cut feels comparing to flexible italic nib.

  • 3 weeks later...

After switching to a finer nib B Italic nib (1.1mm) of MontBlanc, self grind to crisp Italic. Much difficulty in maintaining the flat edge on the paper. Requiring many days, nights writing with an extra light hold of the pen, so that the nib feels smooth on copy paper and regular notebook paper. Scratchy immediately when riding on the corners, thus cutting into the paper.

Now switching back to old nibs ranging from 1.3mm to 1.6mm. Oh what a different, effortless making curves of thick and thin such that Marilyn Monroe would be jealous.

I don't have anything but a kind of pseudo-italic style, thus:

Pen: Ranga thing with a Jowo 1.5 mm stub. Not really crisp enough for italics anyway.

Ink: Diamine Denim

Paper: Rhodia
