Hi Sonik,

Compared to a 1911 standard, this pen is larger and a tad heavier. I find the 1911STD a bit too small for my hands to be used unposted and once posted there is a definite rearward weight bias. The Azaadi however has the right size for my hands to be used unposted and while using it as such, it is supremely well balanced.

Regards,

Chaki

Oh! Then it's perfect since it does not need to be posted...For me, even the Sailor Large models need to be posted, else they feel pretty light.

Sonik

Sanjay, that white Azaadi is gorgeous. Very classic. Thank you for posting this prototype image. Was the material actually casein, or white acrylic?

Sailor large and I share an unique history. I always thought that a 1911L with a Japanese B nib will be my first obvious high end pen purchase. Three years and two sailors later I am not so sure any more. I am confused between colours, between nibs, between CC and Realo and finally I am having a certain disenchantment with standard Sailor nibs.

I am still debating between the Platinum President, the Sailor 1911L and the MB146 and I don't see this anguish ending anytime soon.

Please find comparison pictures of the White&Black Azaadi (Prototype) to Casein Azaadi.

Hi Sanjay,

Thank you for posting these pictures. Its interesting to see the radical difference between the original prototype and the final version. While the barrel has lost some length and tapering, it is the cap that has changed the most. Everything including the length of the crown, the diameter of the cap, the tapering vs parallel profile is different. the only constants are the concentric rings on the finial and the brass clip remain the same.

Chaki

Hi Bob,

If I may respond to your query, the material is actually European Casein. I am attaching a few pictures of my pen made with the same material. Two things to note with this pen are -

  1. There are no rings on this pen since the material was considered too soft to attempt the heat setting method
  2. The surface has been kept untreated in order to exhibit the natural characteristics of the material.

Prithwijt,

This Azaadi in casein is absolutely stunning. The fine striated white and off-white lines of the material contrast so well with the ebonite end pieces and section. As you use this pen, does the casein make it feel particularly fragile?

Hi Bob,

In actual usage the fragility of the casein is more in the mind. You tend to be concerned a bit more and are likely to baby such a pen more.

Please never try to use this pen as an ED though. The material is prone to striations and you cannot be fully confident of giving it a vigorous bath using water.
