Acid scavenger info

The hard rubber can release some sulfur for a short period after the material is machined, which can then form sulfuric acid in the presence of atmospheric moisture. That, in turn, can attack metal trim. An acid scavenger removes acid from the environment.

sooooo, that's a good thing? :D

Are you a chemist?

Thanks, Zaddick. As others have said, a thorough and insightful review. Like you, I checked these out at the SF Show, and spent a lot of time talking with Syd, as I've been following the development for the last year. Unfortunately, it was one of the rare times where I let my head lead my heart: I tried the pen any number of times, and I couldn't shake the feeling that it was too big for me, and as a result would just be some sort of trophy on the wall. I tend to not do that with pens, so I'm waiting for a Doric re-imagining and hopefully that pen (or some pen to come) won't be another gargantuan object.

Then again, that big beautiful pen saved me a lot of money! :)

The only pen I've ever had that was definitely too big for me was the Namiki Emperor, and this one isn't anywhere as big.

I love it.

That's perfectly fine. Did you ever notice that people have different sized hands? I have.

Daniel,

Do you think there's a period of time (ie, 6 month, 1 year, etc...) that the acid scavenger is useful/needed and then after that it's not really needed anymore?

If so, after that period, is it OK to store this pen in a penwrap or other case, tray, etc, alongside celluloid pens or should they always be kept separate?

Thanks.

I don't have enough information regarding the useful life or neutralization capacity of the product, nor do I know the off-gassing characteristics of the hard rubber. I'd direct that question to the manufacturer.

Have you seen this happen with other ebonite pens? I once had an ebonite Sailor King of Pens and I didn't notice any corrosion.

So what qualifies you to make such statements?

Knowledge.

Excellent review of this awesome pen, Zaddick! I received mine in the mail today and am blown away by the quality of the packaging and the pen. It's also an excellent writer. I have small hands, and although it is oversize to the max, I find it quite comfortable and nontiring to write with. I don't post my pens...ever. I think Syd hit one out of the park with this one. Highly recommend the new WE DecoBand. It's a winner!

The retail is $850 in the US. I paid full retail on the pen, but I felt it was worth it and supporting small pen companies is something I try to do as much as possible. MB and Visconti have already gotten enough of my money. :D

You also get a great warranty with this pen, and I have found Syd to be very responsive to emails. He also distributes to several dealers so you can get the pen from multiple sources and see it in person (depending on your location).

Thanx, ZADDICK. 😀😀

Just as I pat myself in the back for recently getting or ordering a few of my grail pens, I see a thread like this. Oh well, better start saving again and add another grail to the list.

Zaddick,

I have retread the review, and drooled very your photos again.. Thank you for such an excellent review.

It struck that Syd's revival of W-E represents the love, care, and attention to detail entirely lacking in the Neo-Onotos. The Onoto nibs do not maintain a consistent font on the lettering. The attempt to recreate the barleycorn texture lacks depth entirely, appearing to be drawn on.

You created a well done tribute to a well executed revival.

IMO, Syd is the only pen manufacturer who is paying proper respect/homage to a revived golden age pen. His Skylines and the DecoBand far outshine anything the new "Esterbrook", Conklin, Onoto, etc have produced. His revived WE pens are every bit as good as the vintage ones. He should be proud of what he's accomplished. He deserves any praise we give him. He's earned it.

It's obviously a work of love.

Leaving price aside I think this is a stunning pen and I don't think it's the monster size everyone says it is. It isn't that much bigger than the 149. I just measured it and my Ranga Bishma is about the same size and girth at the widest point and posted I find it very comfortable to use. If there was a postable version, slightly smaller and with piston filler and a smaller price I'd be all over it - but then, that would be a totally different pen!

Do you know where the pen is made?

I just confirmed with Syd himself the pens are made from parts originating in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. Machining and Assembly is done in Italy and the USA.
