For those that don't like boxes (and after a lot of pens, I can see why another would be a chore to store) I would encourage you to contact Syd directly and see if there is a no box option and maybe a little savings or some extra ink or something else. It can't hurt to ask!

 

For those that do enjoy the packaging, this makes this a great option for a special gift presentation.

A big handful of a pen! I like the ebonite material quite a lot. I do have concerns about the gold plated trim ring at the front of the section; I've been performing metal trim restoration for quite some time now and I've never seen a pen model that had a plated trim ring in that location that did not have the ring attacked by ink, causing pitting/flaking. I'll also note that the protective pouch I see in the pictures appears to be an acid scavenger, not an antioxidant product, though I could be mistaken.

You also get a great warranty with this pen, and I have found Syd to be very responsive to emails. He also distributes to several dealers so you can get the pen from multiple sources and see it in person (depending on your location).

Hi Daniel. I think this is an astute observation. I learned it is possible to take the pen apart and replace just that ring if needed. I am not sure if that would be covered under warranty.

Wow! What an absolutely beautiful pen. Love the shape and the colour of the ebonite and the gold plated hardware and the red feed and the.... (you get the drift!) .

 

I however did not like the look of the nib - the textured surface does not sit with the vintage looking body in my eyes. Further I was expecting more flex from a "Superflex"! But then that is from the pictures. May be different in the hand.

 

But the price ! I will probably need to stay satisfied with the pictures alone!

Thanks for the detailed and emotionally involved revue of your beautiful pen. I can't help quibbling (and kirchh's comment didn't help) that for $850 I would expect at least 12K furniture rather than gold plate, especially on places that are going to get a lot of rubbing or chemical exposure, like the front trim ring or the clip. It seems inconsistent that there would be splendid details like the beautifully executed Greek-key band and even engraving on the filler piston, but then poor stamping on the clip and only plating on the furniture.

All in all, looks like you have a wonderful pen there!

I understand your point, but I think this pen has a lot of fantastic features/qualities, and it's quite beautiful. I think the price is right. It's expensive, yes, but it's going to be worth it for a lot of people. It must have been difficult to bring such a pen to market. I hope it's successful.

The pouch shown in the picture is labeled as being an antioxidant product, but I believe it is an acid scavenger. About what would you like elaboration?

This seems to have become the standard for pens regardless of price. Even luxury pens that are $1000 plus use gold plating for trim. I think Cross might be the last company to produced gold filled pens (Century and Townsend). It's a shame since most quality vintage pens used gold filled/rolled gold trim. Does anyone else know of modern pens that have GF trim?

 

In regard to the pen, I'm very impressed. Considering the attention to detail, the materials used and the build quality, it is fairly priced. When you compare this pen to a MB149 or Pelikan M1000, it can certainly hold its own.

The band reminds me of Omas. And speaking of Omas, I posted elsewhere that an old Omas 556 with very flexible nib is wetter than I like. The nib spreads so effortlessly and writes a wet line.

 

Does your W-E superflex behave like that?

 

What kind of ink do you like in it?

 

Finally, how much does it weigh?
