...and Soft Snows of Ohara looks the way I imagine Shin-kai might if one inked up a pen from which Murasaki Shikibu had been mostly but not entirely flushed. I concur that it is a wet ink, with a feel much like that of the four or five Iroshizuku inks I have tried.

I think that combination would have been much bluer.

Maybe there is variation from bottle to bottle. At least in the pen I am using now, Soft Snows of Ohara is predominantly dark blue, with a whisper of purple that I think I see only because I want it to be there.

I look forward to seeing more reviews on the forum.

Interesting to note! Any batch inconsistencies will be noticed within reviews over time and I too look forward to seeing more reviews of this brand on the forums.

My ink arrived! :D I haven't put any of them in fountain pens yet, and if the box colours are anything to go by, Soft Snows of Ohara seems to be more blue than purple. Also, I didn't realize when ordering that the bottles were only 40ml. They're rather small.

I was thinking of pairing Higashiyama no tsukikage with the pen I have coming in the mail (a Pelikan tortoise), so I did a quick dip test with it. I love the colour, but I'm not so sure I will use it with that pen (might try Gion no ishidatami instead, though it occurred to me that KWZI Honey would be the perfect match), as it looks to be of the class of ink colours that might stain. It reminds me a little of Ancient Copper, though perhaps closer to Terracotta (which I don't own)? Anyone inked a pen up with it yet?

That's beautiful.

I am really loving Soft Snows of Ohara, which turns out to look bluer on white papers and purpler on off-white papers for some reason. Also bluer in a very fine point and purpler when I tried it with a glass dip pen. Next I think I'll try it in a medium point. I suspect there will be some shading. Flows beautifully, easy to flush. I haven't seen feathering on any paper, including Moleskine, but we'll see whether the same is true when I use a medium point.

WOW.. and that's why I ask for a picture. I couldn't remember that gorgeous terracota color on any of the bottles. Now, I know which bottle to order. ;)

Thanks!!!

You're welcome, always happy to enable more inky purchases! :D I think the rakuten swatch looks like a somewhat unappealing flat orange colour, but I took a chance hoping it might be a bit like Fukurou (I don't know whether it is though!).

Would love to read your thoughts about it if you do get a bottle, these inks need more reviews. :)

Er, me again.

I haven't filled a pen with Higashiyama no tsukikage yet, but I'm really loving it with dip pens. It gives beautiful thin hairlines.

Gion Stone Road is a really interesting colour. It's very aptly named, though it also reminds me a little of watered down sumi ink, or maybe dried seaweed?

Edit: replaced the photos with new ones taken under natural light. It looked browner in the light of day. :P

Thank you, Candide. From the photograph, it looks like a less saturated version of Rohrer and Klingner Sepia, which also has a tinge of green. Is this an ink you could see using for regular writing, or is too pale?

Sorry, I don't have R&K Sepia, because I read here that it was similar to Cacao de Brésil. This Gion Stone Road looks like a less grey/more brown version of the Cacao de Brésil I have (which is really rather more grey/taupe than brown). I haven't put it into a pen yet, so I'm not sure how it'll look. That being said, I have no problems using Kiri-same in a Japanese F nib for regular writing, so I might not be the person to ask. :P

I'll try to take a photo in natural light later, I still think the colours are a bit off in the photos.

Although, I googled 祇園の石畳 and it looks quite dark and perfectly readable (and very beautiful) in other people's pens. :P

  • 1 year later...

Thank you for drawing my attention to these inks all those months ago, Algester. At that time, I was able to purchase Soft Snow of Ohara through Rakuten, and it remains my favorite ink.

Since then, it has become possible to order these inks from a company in the United States.

Yes, Vanness and now Anderson Pens in the US have these inks. I've very much enjoyed the inks I have in this line.
