I orderd one on Jan 24. Still waiting.

Contact the seller. At least my delivery was insured, hence the sender (hobby-japan) will get full refund if the package hasn't arrived within 30 days. I.e. they will send you a new converter.

true... 1950s was the time they introduced the Super series which was entirely stuck on converters "switch fillers" but other Super series pens still used different "converters" undocumented probably beyond what I can read in Crónicas Estilográficas

this I will have to dig about the only converter usable by the first capless would have been the SS use converters but the first capless came out in 1963 unless Pilot kinda got lazy and just said to use cartridges until they got converters that fit later on

as they introduced the CON-W according to the page in 1994.

Fixed fillers are not converters. Converters "convert" a cartridge pen into a bottle filled pen.

Of course, there were older converters for use with the double spare cartridge pens, I have a few in my possession. Con W is the later spare part for these pens.

the pic linked above is not complete but is still very informative and a nice thing.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Converter for the Elite 95 as labeled in Pilot Japan's website

適合コンバーター(インキ吸入器)

CON-40 CON-20 ※カートリッジインキもご使用できます。

Just got my hands on CON-40 and I am also able to confirm this. The CON-40 works in my 1970s original Elite, see https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/305381-my-con-40s-have-arrived/ .

and the CON-50 and CON-20 arent much different in their height... I guess...

Not really. They both fit into the Capless with no problem and I think this says something about the height.

I agree, and I don't particularly care whether the new converter holds 0.5ml or 0.4ml. I'm more interested in whether the new converter is an improvement in functionality over the old one (or at least it should be no worse), but it seems most of the thread has been about the reduction in capacity. But then my pens are on the finer end of the spectrum so even 0.5ml (or 0.4ml) goes a long way. I also never carry just one pen so running out of ink is not an issue for me. Personally, I prefer to refill my pen more often than let the ink sit around in the pen, so I have no complaints about the small capacity of Japanese converters. :)

+1. I get to write so little nowadays that my main problem is ink sitting too long in my pens, rather than running out.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

to be honest if were going to talk about Pilot bottles I like the no longer existing Iroshizuku 25ml bottles

I will have no comments for the Converter just yet... not until I find out they dont fit into their older but newer than CON-W enabled cartridge pens

Terribly sorry to derail the discussion, but do you happen to have a picture of the 25ml Iro bottles? I did a quick search online but couldn´t find anything relevant.

Thanks for the link. So, essentially they were pretty close to the current mini bottle (except a little bigger and with a less appealing cap).

PS. I think I might have to start studying Japanese! I´ve noticed that I am always missing a good part of the good stuff. :)

I picked up two CON-40s from amazon, they arrived last week and I started using one of them with my 78G.

First impressions:

The rattle: I would almost liken the sound to that of a box of tic-tacs. On some level it's satisfying to know that those little beads are doing their job inside the ink chamber. The sound is not very intrusive. The lug nut inside the con-50 was so bad I had to disassemble it and take the thing out.

Piston: seems the gasket sticks a bit to the walls. It takes a bit of coercion to get the piston to travel. Maybe it needs a bit of silicone grease, but I haven't yet figured out how to disassemble the thing, if anyone has had success with taking it apart please chime in.

Hydrophobic: cannot comment yet on how the ink would tend to cling to the back of the converter, I filled it all the way up with aurora black (generally a very wet ink). But I'm less concerned about that because of the agitators; the problem should no longer be there.

Also now there's this business of a strainer at the nozzle which is meant to keep the beads in and let the ink pass. In previous converters there was nothing, and I wonder how much will the ink cling to this metallic retainer.

Overall I'm quite pleased with the thing and I feel it's an upgrade from the CON-50. I am, however, finding out now that (at $16 a pop) I might have paid too much for it, ordering from amazon, but oh well.. Live and learn.

  • 4 weeks later...

I just wanted to add that it has solved my flow issues that I had with my Pilot 912 with A FA nib. It cured my the hard starting, and skipping-As well as the railroading. The rub is, it doesn't hold as much, but oh well. I'm pretty happy with it.

At first I was really into the Con-50 and abandoned my Con-20 but twisting gets pretty tiring when you're cleaning the pens. I find the Con-20 to be really simple but you can't really see the ink inside and I feel there is always residue so it has its drawbacks. I bought 7 Con-50's which I now regret. If someone wants to trade their Con-20's for 50's Pm me. I won't be buying Con-40 because it's essencially the same thing. The rattle on the 50 was always minimal to me and I actually enjoy it. I do like that it helps the pens start though. The Con 40 is same twist mechanic.

You can buy "white" con20s on the bay. Like tons of them. And if you don't care for the japan tag look for pilot korea con20s.

I don't know if you were aware but it is possible to take a con-50 completely apart. I do that when I want to give the thing a thorough cleaning and lubrication. I'm not a fan of cleaning the thing by twisting the piston back and forth umpteen number of times either.

The metal ring at the back just under the piston knob is threaded in place and then secured with some glue. You can, if you want, take a pair of grippy gloves and try to unscrew the metal ring (right hand rule) and with some force, the glue will break loose and it will unscrew normally.

You then have the option of getting rid of the agitator and put some smaller pellets from an old std int'l converter in there.

The con-50's were not my favorites until I discovered this trick from a Goulet video and now those things are a lot more manageable.

Disclaimer: the thing is not meant to be taken apart as can be surmised from the securing with glue. So disassemble (if you decide to do so) only sparingly.

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.
    • Claes 17 Apr 8:19
      @bhavini A glass nibbed pen

@Jeffrey Sher it looks like this user used to be the organizer of the club https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/profile/8343-hj1/ perhaps you could send him a direct message, although his profile says he hasn't been on the site since 2021.

CANNOT FIND A LINK to pen club israel. what is eth website please
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...
    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.
    • T.D. Rabbit 2 Mar 10:20
@lamarax That's what I used! (In reply to black coffee).. But the milk might not be good at all for paper.

    • lamarax 17 Feb 18:05
Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

Somewhat confusing and off-putting ones, as said to me by my very honest friends. I don't have an X account though :<
