Sailor Kobe # 51 Kano Cho Midnight

Based on this review I ordered a bottle which arrived over the weekend. Inked up my Platinum 3776 Chartres Blue with a C nib and I'm loving it. Flows like silk, indeed. Appears as a really dark navy blue to my eyes. This will easily become a daily use ink for me. Very well behaved on every paper I've tried it on. Thank you, Vis, for your usual comprehensive review of this awesome ink.

I've been using this for about 2 weeks now in a JIF fine and, yes, it's exactly the blue-black I'd been hoping to find - very dark yet not quite black; like Miruai but blue.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Really interested to see how this compares to Bungu Box 4B, because it's a darn sight easier to get ahold of...

Doesn't 4B has a red sheen?... This one has green sheen... which I find more "sexy"...

Sexy, perhaps, but I can't imagine the green being as dramatic as that peeping red...

I'm enjoying using this ink in a Sailor Pro Gear Blue Sky with a H-MF nib. It feathers less than Monteverde Blue-Black, the other ink I use most often. Both inks are very dark, without much blue unless you really look for it. Perfect for any business or professional application.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

They are not very close imho. Both are great, but they are quite different. 4B has a teal touch, which #51 doesn't.

Also the read sheen of 4B is much more pronounced than the green sheen of #51.

Great review of a great ink! This is one of my top Kobes too. One thing I noticed though is that it has a pink element in it that I was worried was starting to stain a demonstrator, so I emptied the pen and filled it with Doyou and all was fine. Did anyone else have any similar experiences?

A bottle arrived today, much more quickly than I expected from Japan. Very nice ink, but no green sheen for me, just a bit of silver/pink. I guess I need a broader nib or less porous paper, although I'm using Clairefontaine.

  • 2 weeks later...

I got a sample of this ink and couldn't find the sheen- I will try with vintage flex nib and see...nice blue either way.

However I did just post up a pic of Shosaikan Seiran and Pen and Message Vintage Denim- both of which reliably sheen to this green. I agree that this deep indigo sheen to green is far more dramatic than the usual blue to pink or purple.

I've found the sheen is pretty elusive. The best results I've had is on the 4x5 Polish-made spiral (hardly any on the larger, 6x8 German-made one) and the 6x8 Rhodia spiral ruled. With both the Rhodia dot pad and the Blue Sky Smart Notes, I can clearly see the sheen as it's drying but then most of it gets sucked into the paper, leaving just traces.

This ink is quite trick to get to sheen. But when it does, it's beautiful!

It takes the right paper and the right pen. Oxford Optik and a wet pen helps...

Oxford Optik? I haven't heard of that before I'll look it up. Would also be interested if you know what card stock is best for bringing out the sheen in ink swatches...

I use these notebooks for my everyday work. They are brilliant. They are slightly glossy, which some might dislike, but it helps to bring out sheen.

I have this inked in a double broad Montblanc here at the office today. It's deep, dark blue, and very rich in saturation. Love the color, but there is zero sheen on cheap copy paper. I'm likely going to use this as my go to ink at work.

Nope, no sheen on copy paper. You have to get a paper that is more prone to sheening, lite Tomoe River, Oxford Optik, Graphilo, etc. Probably some of Clairefontaine's paper will do the job as well.

Finally received mine. Not really loving the colour - it's lacking some drama...

Too many pens; too little writing.
