Waterman Exception Night & Day With Platinum Stripes

Thanks Tweel, could you enlighten me on the 70/80s Waterman models that you mention ? thanks again.

The older of my two pens is a Watermina, which you can find under the year 1973 here. The cap and barrel look like the upper pen in the second advertisement, although it's a fountain pen. The newer pen is a Man 200, which I believe came out in 1985 and was discontinued in 1994. Mine looks like the one in this FPN post. The Watermina has a gold-plated overlay, the Man 200 a silver-plated one.

I also have a Carène stub, and don't find it to be dry at all. It's a great nib, and I'm glad I bought it.

Thanks, DOL, for such a unique review of a very handsome quality pen!

I've got the black guilloche version of this pen and it's one of my favorite pens.

A great writer and feels good in the hand too.

HI Tweel,

The Watermina is beautiful and the Man 200 N&D in silver is Stunning! Thanks for bringing those to my notice. I understand that the inner barrel of the Man 200 are prone to breakage, is that right or a rumour?

On the Carene, with the right ink, it is brilliant but somehow I feel that it displays a bit of a dry behaviour with certain inks for example with J. Herbin . With Iroshizuku, it floats. It is indeed a great nib. What ink do you normally use with the Carene, if I may ask ?

Hi Mark,

The N&D Black guilloche was right there with the Platinum on my hit list, if I had not spotted the Platinum, the black guilloche would be giving me company right now. Somehow the black-grey-black is very intriguing, so very polished. Did you happen to get yourself a stub nib too?

Thank you, I hope to enjoy the pens for a long time to come. I'm not sure of the fragility of more the standard Man 200s -- I think the Night & Day version is constructed differently, with three layers of barrel. The innermost barrel is brass, and possibly the thin-walled black acrylic middle layer is protected by the metal on each side. On the other hand, the acrylic on the Watermina is definitely brittle, and the threaded end of the inner cap is broken off and missing on mine -- meaning it's strictly a desk pen until I can eventually have someone fabricate a new liner out of some tougher resin. A couple of the collector fins are chipped off, too.

I've been keeping the Carène filled with Sailor Jentle "Sky High".

Hi Tweel,

Very insightful information there, thank you. I'd love to test the "Sky High" for my Carene as well, but a litre (I am not kidding) of Pelikan 4001 Royal blue is tugging at my pyjamas.

Thanks for posting a review of this pen - apparently it exists in a vacuum, as it is really hard to find a review of this pen. If I could be honest, while your review is novel... brevity... is nice.

Thanks Weaveras, appreciated. I'll try to keep it short next time around :)

Your review is fantastic.

I want one.

Dangit.

Thanks AL01 . Glad to you liked the review. Yes, it is that good. It's been a while since I wrote this review, now with more experience I can say, it still writes like a dream. The lacquer still has the same depth, resists scratchs well , the Platinum stripes have not lost their sheen, it still garners admiring looks and appreciative nods. Go for it. If you have the the means, there is a Serling silver version of the same. Happy hunting

(Sterling silver?!)

I recommend you make more reviews....

Really....

I think you will present us a great way to look at pens.

Take care,

- AL01.

I reread this exquisite review. I would really enjoy to read more reviews from you DanceOfLight. The Waterman is a beautiful pen. I am looking at it for at least a couple of years in one of our local shops and have not yet decided to pull the trigger as I am not sure about its handling and the support.

Yup Sterling Silver - AFAIK it is called the Times Edition, likely around 600USD and up. IMO is very beautiful pen. Thanks again for the complements, I'll try to write another one soon.

Thank you for your kind words Gistar. I'm not sure what you mean my handling, if you can explain I'd be happy to help. From the support point of view, if you mean, after-sale support then I have had pleasant experience with Newellco team in the past. I have even written about it here
