All of these are wonderful!

Did this in about 5 seconds, and went cartoony, because, toofbrush. Jurassic Park. Threatening.

#2 Toothbrush

Pen: Massag 57 G (vintage Czechoslovakian) dip pen with pen holder and under-mount reservoir

Ink: Sailor Storia Clown (Yellow Green) and De Atramentis Document Turqoise

Paper: DIY sketchbook made with Arches 300gsm/140lbs Cold Press paper

Thoughts: I don't think I've ever looked at toothbrushes so carefully before this week :). The curves, bumps, different textures were all quite tricky to draw for me. This week I tried using two different inks in the same drawing for the first time. I am not sure if I like how I did it. I will try more and see if it grows on me. Perhaps I will later put watercolour wash over top and see what it looks like too.

I love the ink color combo! Great sketchs.

Thank you!

milkb0at, I really like the colour of iron gall ink in a drawing. I should try it myself as I always have a few pens inked with IG inks.

TAS, I really like the dynamic shape of the toothpaste and the dark shadows! And the wash is showing off the grain of the paper.

stonezebra, I can almost feel the bzzzzzzz motion of the toothbrush's vibration. Lovely spontaneous drawing!

Kenshin, your toothbrush made me smile. He's a character that one, look at him all bristled up! :lticaptd:

I gotta get a dip pen.

This is a great thread, Pira. Thank you for starting it.

I have never had much faith in my drawing/sketching abilities. I have never used my fountain pens for it. But this is inspiring me to give it a shot. I just inked up a favorite pen with a new ink sample, which will be perfect for something I have in my fridge for week #3. Whether or not I end up posting it here, I will definitely attempt the sketch. Thank you!!

No one judges but everyone appreciates. This is a lovely space . . .

This is for fun. If you can hold a pen, then sketch away and post.

Okay, so I do not draw. At all. But I really admire all the talent and the different approaches on display in this thread. And then Tas gave me just the nudge of encouragement I needed, and I decided to give it a shot, expecting the worst, of course.

And I learned something: This is hard. Really hard. But also a lot of fun once you stop being terrified that the next mark you make will ruin everything. It's especially bad before you've even made that first line.

Now, on to practical considerations: I have never lamented my choice in toothbrushes as I did today. I know my drawing is poor, but I assure you that some of that wonky shape really does represent an actual toothbrush. Look up Radius toothbrushes and you will see that I am not lying. (Why did it have to be transparent too?)

Having done this on an impulse, I used what materials I had on hand:

Platinum 3776 Century Nice Pur, Broad nib

Iroshizuku Shin-Kai ink

Kuretake water brush (This sat unopened in the packaging for about a year and a half - the last time I thought I might give drawing something a try, but never did)

Tomoe River paper (the only blank paper I had on hand, and I have to say that I am stunned at how it held up to so much ink and water)

Finally, you guys are fantastic. I wouldn't have even tried this if not for all your posts here. Thank you.

Well done.

Well-done, Elevennx! I think I actually HAVE one of those things.

Seriously? I've never met anyone else who recognized it. Cool. And thank you for the kind words.

:) :) :)

Thanks, Tas :)

I can't wait to see what you do for the next assignment.

Thanks! Although I think I've always considered the heavy reading and paper writing classes as the most work.

Week #3: condiment from my fridge (which, with sumac, are the perfect ingredients to recreate my favorite Lebanese spinach pies).

Thank you, Tas and Snowbear, for the encouragement.

My concluding comments from Week #2 ~ Toothbrush

stonezebra ~ zzzzzt ~ quick but electrifying!

Sailor Kenshin ~ Dental hygiene with attitude!!

SNAK ~ Well you certainly got enthusiastic. Great drawing and so vibrant! While the Storia is a permanent ink you can use it like a wash...and don't forget all those water soluable inks work well in that regard after you have done the drawing. Having said that I really like the light you bring to the glass :D As for not having looked so closely at a toothbrush before...ditto. I was a bit stunned at the complexity of them.

By the way...what are you thoughts on using Storia. I've not tried it. Not a fan of the name of that shade though...(yes I have a slight case of Coulrophobia...why do you ask?)

Goodpens ~ you are must welcome. Tas & Snowbear are right. Don't be afraid. Just jump right in and join the happy sketch gang having a grand old time :)

elevenex ~ First off... *HIGH FIVE* ...for giving this a whirl. Way to be! :D

You are not alone in cursing the mad engineers who designed these toothbrushes. WHAT on EARTH were those fools thinking about when they put concocted these things?

You did that with a broad nib...I am impressed. If i tried that I would have ended up looking like a elephants grooming brush after it passed through it's digestive tract. Well done.

As for ink being terrifying ~ yes it is. There is no undo button with pen and ink. It's scary stuff, but you want to know a secret? Every time you do it...you build up the confidence a bit more. The point is not to create a perfect drawing. Each drawing teaches you something. What you got right. What you were not happy with and want to change next time. Even the best of the best illustrators...mess up. That misplaced line at the end of a drawing session or that BLOB which suddenly appeared... :yikes: You WILL have those moments. Cry if you must...then pick up your pen once more and draw again.

Okay everyone ~ a round of applause for the whole lot of you for taking time to put pen to paper. YES those toothbrush designers are evil incarnate! Who knew? Thank-you for participating and sharing your fantastic results!

...and now on to Week #3!

Nice.

We just got our first bottle of that (different brand); Number one son made a pork tenderloin and used the pom molasses for a glaze.

I'm working on mine, or rather, "we" are working on it. I should be able to get it online tonight.
