The Weekly Sketch ~ Themed Drawing Prompts For Members

Pira

Recommended Posts

I've been toying with ideas for the open book sketch and I think I've got something to do. It will take longer than my ususal 10-minute sketches so I'll start tonight and see how it goes.

On a different but related note, if anyone is using Flickr (I do), there have been a couple of articles about Yahoo having some financial difficulties; there is speculation of layoffs and selling or ending some of their business entities. Nothing specific to Flickr has been published, but I've made sure I had everything backed up and I've tested the "share" feature of another site to make sure I can post in forums.

I'm not as diligent as I would like to be, but every once in a while I manage to do some sketching.

This one goes back a few weeks.

Socks are hard. Especially thick ones without out any real distinguishing features. I got a Sailor Fude de Mannen today. It's a fun little tool for sketching.

Welcome. Sketch what you want, sketch when you can.

Nice job on both.

This weeks is now roughed-in with pencil. I'll start laying down the inks tomorrow night. I'm going to have to do a photo this week as I've gone back to the large sketchbook and the pages won't fit on the scanner.

It's done. I was going to add more detail but I decided to leave it. Not exactly a magazine but maybe more interesting - a pen catalog!

I made a couple of color mistakes but, oh well.

2B pencil for initial blocking in (it's an old Utrecht Art brand).

Most of the line work was inked in with a Shaeffer Taranis (the purple pen sketched in) inked with Iro. Fugu Syogun

The red page border (a closeout sale) is Iro. Momoji from the Ferrari (Sheaffer 300).

The blue Waterman BP & FP (catalog) is Noodler's Navajo Turquoise from the Goldspot promo Jinhao 159.

The Taranis was inked in with the Pelikan M205 Amethyst & Amethyst ink.

Finally, the blue on the sketchbook is Diamine Shimmer Blue Pearl from the Noodler's brush pen. This is the mistake - it should have been black but I forgot I loaded it with blue and my light wasn't great.

Some of the darker black is from the Cross Bailey, with Noodler's Black (I think - I forgot to log it).

As you can see, I had a little help on this one. ;) Well, not really, as she isn't allowed on the dining room table - my sketch area for a little while.

The shimmer ink was put in the brush pen as an experiment. I didn't think the gold flecks would go through the brush and it doesn't looks like they did, so I'll stick with standard inks from now on.

The blue-ish pen in the corner is the Ice Blue Conklin Duragraph. I didn't use it in the sketch, but it was nearby and I love the pen.

I had time for more sketching today, so here are some socks for weekly theme #12.

Very nice sketch! I like the way it turned out.

I rarely decide beforehand on what pen either.

THis is great!

I'm quite impressed with the variety of pens, pencils, inks, etc. that you managed to include in one sketch.

I"m way way way behind on sketching (and letter writing too at the moment) but new inks and a new pen arrived this week. Seeing the last few sketches posted here have me eager to knock out my morning work and carve out a little free time.

What did you get?

I've got some rainy-day (and snowy-day) money set aside and can't decide if I want grab a couple of Lamy Safaris now or wait until a local shop has their bi-annual "show and sale" and grab something else. The shop is normally a bit over priced for me (they have some really top-end items) but when they do the 10% discounts, I can usually find something. I got the Sheaffers during the Fall show.

Thank you, Tas. I am really enjoying these and look forward to the theme announcements.

Oh, I dread them now. I'm soooo behind :(

I'm baaaack...in a manner of speaking.

I am so happy to see that the lot of you have kept this place bouncing along while I've been

AWOL with real life things. I didn't forget you though, and now I'm going to sit down and concentrate on catching up with you busy little bees have been up to...and if I am lucky, actually doing one or more of the projects I keep dumping on your gracious laps.

*rubs paws together*...all righty then...

Lostcity ~ I think that knitting & twisted skein were a brilliant interpretation of string :D

Sailor Kenshin ~ NOT cheating. Nope. Not at all! That is called killing two birds with a single stone and I love it!

That pen reminds me of my Desiderata Daedalus...except that one is an eyedrop filler that is designed to by used with a Zebra G nib. I am looking forward to trying it out with some other fine dip nibs, in particular some European ones.

Snowbear ~ it's interesting though about art (you were talking about art class work loads) is that although we KNOW it takes work, people treat art as if it has little or no value compared to other skillsets. You'd never ask your plumber or lawyer for a freebe, but boy do people expect that from artists. Just because we enjoy the work (for the most part) and it looks like fun to people that can't draw doesn't mean that an artist should be making $0 / hr. I'm sure other trades enjoy their work too...but only artists and to some extent, writers get asked to do stuff gratis.

*this is my pet peeve in case you didn't notice*

Your eggcarton ~ nice linework. Feels very loose and free. My eggcarton model is still by my desk....i might get to it before Spring

SOCKS! they look like a fun pair :)

Thanks for the heads up on Flickr

I was going to mention on that complex sketch for the book/magazine.....that I spied a helper immediately! So much work but well worth the effort me thinks.

Moominyak ~ fantastically colourful toothbrush & condiment jar.

As an aside...don't feel compelled to do all the themes. These are just fun prompts for people who want/need them. I'm taking a break at the moment because I'm buried by 'need to do' artwork....and I am too old to sweat not engaging in fun projects. ;)

Milkb0at ~ good string and I like that....it's not an egg carton, but hey it's a container for AN egg. I really like those socks...and yes, love me some Platinum carbon desk pens for sketching :D

TedA ~ Sketching once and a while is better than never at all :) Good job and thank-you for shariing!

Tas ~ Don't dread them!!!! Just pick and choose what you want to when you have the time. Believe me....I'd have a nervous breakdown if I decided I needed to actually 'catch-up'...and I'm the one coming up with them. No worries...

Pterodactylus ~ LOL!!!! That's a GREAT hand!!!!

Welcome back, Pira; hoping everything is going well. Thank you, it was hard in two ways - getting things sized properly and looking at those Waterman Hemispheres, waiting for the next sale.

Thanks for all the sketches everyone. I enjoy seeing them all and it's nice to participate when I find the time. Luckily I had time this morning, so here's my book for sketch #13.

post-54491-0-27976200-1454939216_thumb.jpg

Sorry about the poor photo / scan. The weather is very dark and stormy here today.

The book is At the Loch of the Green Corrie by Andrew Greig, which I found moving and beautiful.

- Pencil outline. For once, this time I "cheated" and used a ruler, since the book is lots of straight lines and perspective. By the time I've scribbled the ink over the top, though, it's hard to tell that I used a ruler. Also, I found the ruler not as easy as I first thought, since the temptation is to look at the detail and not consider the overall shape. The pencil is my shiny new Ohto Super Promecha 0.5, which is very fancy but happily I barely noticed while actually using.

- Gillott 404 dip nib, with a small bit of 303 for the really thin bits like the words, and the ink is Higgins Eternal

- Moleskine Pocket Sketchbook

The open page is a poem by the author, based on the Loch of the Green Corrie. I find the poem very powerful, so wrote it out here.
