Pilot Metropolitan Bad Flow

Recommended Posts

I bought a pilot metropolitan fine nib and inked it up with diamine marine. Both the pen and the ink are brand new but the experience is really bad. It skips, it feathers. Moreover sometimes flow is not continuous and one can see small bumps and discontinuities in the writing. I have tried putting the pen in an upside down position for 3 days but no improvement. Paper I am using is not too great but not too bad either. My platinum preppy is performing fine on it. Any suggestions as to what can be done.

Did you flush the pen before you inked it up?

Sometimes there are residue left in the feed from the production.

I know that in my past experiences Diamine Marine will feather a bit on lesser paper, but I never had any issues with it skipping when I've used it before. I'd highly recommend flushing out the pen with some water and 10% ammonia or a bit of dish soap to see if that helps.

The pen is significantly performing better after flushing. But the feathering issue persists. As @ThirdeYe said diamine marine might be built for better quality paper. But apart from that there are no issues. Thank you everyone.

Nice to hear that the issue is sorted.

Try an ink less prone to feathering, it will probably solve your second problem.

I have a Pilot Metropolitan in fine. I never had the problems you had though and I never flushed it upon reciept. Guess I was lucky. I have tried the Pilot ink cartridges in black and blue. Also tried Diamine Imperial Purple, Sherwood green and Asa blue. All worked quite well in the Metro. Work well on cheap paper and also quite well on Franklin-Christoph paper. Only feathering I noted was on like really cheapo paper. Most papers were fine though, my guess is because it's a fine nib and doesn't lay down a lot of ink like a medium or broad would. I also tried Diamine emerald, a real disappointment. Went on dry, dried to a dusty looking olive drab. Looked nothing like emerald. Different inks will react differently in different pens. Just have to experiment to find what your pen likes. I think that is some of the fun of having a fountain pen.
